WSJ: Chinese Military Using US-Made Satellites

China has found a way to exploit an apparent loophole to use American-made satellites for military purposes, which includes allowing communication with Chinese soldiers on artificial islands in the South China Sea.

According to The Wall Street Journal, China is using nine satellites orbiting the Earth that were manufactured in the United States. American companies are not allowed to export satellites to China, the Journal reported. Once the satellite is launched, however, there is nothing stopping China or any other country from using it.

Boeing is working on another satellite that China would use for a GPS-like system, but the company has temporarily ceased production as it sorts out how to proceed.

"It's a serious ethical and moral problem as well as a national security issue," Larry Wortzel, a former chairman of the bipartisan U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, told the Journal.

It was reported in December that China owns 75% of Global IP, a Los Angeles-based startup that sold the stake to an intermediary company. Global IP was not aware at the time of the sale that China was behind the purchase.

China's military moves, both behind the scenes and blatantly obvious, have many U.S. officials worried. The communist nation is building and arming artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea, for example, while it is also believed to be behind incidents in which powerful, military-grade lasers were shone at U.S. military aircraft.

A retired Army Reserve colonel even believes China is planning to expand its presence with a new military base on Pakistan's Jiwani peninsula.
