At least the Nazi's were smart enough to fuel their tanks with diesel. I was shocked when a friend of my father told me that the US tanks were powered with gasoline engines. He was drafted during WW-2,and won a Silver Star and battlefield promotion to 1st Lt in one of the first US tank battles of the war.
Funny, but true story. WW-2 ended and when he had enough "points" to rotate back to the states, that is exactly what he did. He just came home instead of reporting in to his new duty station. He told the MP's when they came to get them that he was drafted for the duration of the war,and the damn war was over,so he came home.
The thing is officers don't have a ETS. They serve at the pleasure of the military. I am certain that if he had waited a few months the army would have busted him back down to E-5 or E-6 and sent him home due to the sudden excess of young officers they had,but he didn't want to wait,so he just went home.
Only time in my life I ever saw him get mad was one day I said something nice about Patton. I thought his head was going to explode. I think he hated Patton more than he did the Nazi's.

I was watching the movie they made about him with George C. Scott.
A couple of grunts saw him. One said to the other, "There he goes, old "Blood and Guts."
The other said back, "Yeah. Our blood, his guts." :-O
