The USS Liberty, a lightly armed electronic recon ship was off the coast of the Sinai at the time the Israelis invaded. They picked up intelligence the Israelis massacred 3,000 Egyptian prisoners in the Sinai. The Israelis tried to sink her but could not do it. LBJ said, "That ship needs to go to the bottom." Capt. McGonagle was given the Medal of Honor in a private ceremony.
The USS Liberty Incident of 1967 was a result of Operation Cyanide, a failed false flag attack intended to sink the USS Liberty, a lightly armed US Navy signals intercept ship. At the time, the Israeli air force stated that the ship was mistakenly identified, but it had many radio antennas mounted on its open decks and three large masts, including two large parabolic reflector antennas. The ship was subjected to a combined air and sea attack by Israel's Defense Forces during the Six Day War, but failed to sink as planned.[1]
