pmf... Earth’s rotation is slowing - and it could cause major earthquakes Earth's rotation is slowing down as the Moon moves farther away from the planet - and scientists believe it could cause major earthquakes.

Earth's rotation is slowing as our planet uses energy to keep the tidal bulge ahead of the Moon's orbit. The Moon's gravity keeps Earth's rotation in check, and to do this the lunar satellite's orbit must be slightly ahead of Earth's. As the Moon attempts to regulate Earth's rotation and slow it down, the Moon moves slowly away.

According to Matthew Funke, solar system ambassador for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who wrote on Q+A website Quora: "The Moon's gravity creates a tidal bulge on the Earth. This bulge attempts to rotate at the same speed as the rest of the planet.

"As it moves 'ahead' of the Moon, the Moon attempts to pull it back. This slows the Earth's rotation down.

Comment: Venus is also spinning slower. Are there any other cosmic reasons that is contributing for the slowing down of Earth and other anomalies observed in the solar system.

"One of the rules of the Universe is that 'angular momentum' can't go anywhere — even if individual pieces speed up, slow down, or change direction, the sum total of angular momentum cannot change.

"The Earth loses angular momentum when the Moon slows it down, so the Moon has to gain it — and it does, by moving further away in its orbit.

"The Moon is currently receding from the Earth by about one and a half inches per year."

This could lead to major earthquakes down the line.

A slower rotating globe leads to stronger and more frequent earthquakes - exactly why this is the case is unclear, but experts believe it could be down to changes in the Earth's core which ultimately has an effect on the surface.

Research from Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula looked at earthquakes with a magnitude higher than seven since 1900. moon_1974861.jpg © GETTY The Moon is drifting away from Earth The duo found five years since the turn of the 20th century where there were significantly more magnitude 7.0-plus earthquakes - all of which were years that earth's rotation speed had slowed down slightly.

Prof Bilham said: "In these periods, there were between 25 to 30 intense earthquakes a year.

"The rest of the time the average figure was around 15 major earthquakes a year. earthquake_1974862.jpg © GETTY The correlation between Earth’s rotation and earthquake activity is strong "The correlation between Earth's rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes."

However, this is not expected to happen for billions of years, according to Physicist Paul Walorski who explained on physics forum PhysLink: "The slowing rotation of the Earth results in a longer day as well as a longer month.

"That's been projected to happen once the day and month both equal about 47 (current) days, billions of years in the future."

Zharkov A longer day means a hotter day as the sun exposure is longer. If the earth stopped rotating, one side would fry, the other side would freeze.

Hard to imagine the current distance between earth and moon and/or the slowing of the earth's spin would now be reaching some critical stage after billions of years of orbiting.

the current distance between earth and moon

This is now known because the Apollo Astronauts left mirrors om the surface of the moon. There is an observatory in west Texas that shoots lasers at the moon to measure its distance. This is how they know the moon is moving away from the Earth. ;)

Maybe.... IF the moon landings really happened.... hehe

Are you a doubter?

All you need to see is the telemetry of the day's events when the LEM is going down for a landing. It was heading for a crater, and Neil Armstrong took manual control and flew it up and over the rim of the crater to flat ground.

And what about the lasers they shoot at the moon? How do you think they have figured out the moon is moving away from Earth at about 1-1/2 inches a year?

One of the Apollo missions placed mirrors on the moon. An observatory in west Texas shoots lasers at those mirrors. This is how they can tell the difference in distance between Earth and Moon. ;)

Are you a doubter?

No, I'm being sarcastic.

All the arguments against moon landings I've considered, from starless moon photos to the lack of blast craters to the Van Allen radiation belts I have decided are flawed.

The most recent allegation mentions a lack of time delay in earth to moon communications that seem to lack the required 1.5 second delay for the speed of light to travel the distance. Haven't heard details that one yet.

Here is what I found about the moon landing and communications. The part you want to see starts at 1:13:30. ;)

Some modern presentations of the moon landing will edit out the gaps created by the communication delay to make conversation sound more natural, but if you look at the timestamped transcripts, you can verify the 2.5 second round trip delay. Note that the timestamps all refer to the time the Earth-side recording occurred, so the radio delay appears when one of the crew members (CMP, CDR, LMP in the transcript) is responding to the Capcom (CC).

I had a feeling that that would be the explanation, and it's not an unreasonable one.

I don't doubt the moon landing. I KNOW it's a whopper ;-)

In case of emergency, break spell: this is the govt that lies to us about everything in direct proportion to its importance. Unfortunately not only google but Yahoo and even Yandex searching is now so botched it's harder to lay hands on the facts that way, but I've saved up the main stuff,

A professor buddy (a PhD no less) who send out an email calling moon truthers morons without doing ANY research. Here's what I sent him -- pix don't unfortunately come thru:

Unworthy of you, Steven.

Governments pull off one massive hoax after another and this moon stuff fits the mold perfectly..... Do you think this contraption blasted off from the moon and connected with the main rocket at 4,000 mph?

Lovely foil, isn't it? I think they sell that color at Walgreens in December.

How fresh do you think you'd be looking if your nose cone had just shot thru the atmosphere and smashed into the ocean at 1,652 MPH?

His responses were pathetic, aimless, girlish -- and logorrheic. I replied and told him I was concerned about him, which I am.

There were three parachutes that deployed to give them a softer landing in the ocean. ;)

I'm totally ignorant about science, and you may have me on that point but I've only given a smidge of the case here ;-)

Note that nobody's commenting on the above video, just like Steve didn't. These astronauts talk just like bright 10-year-olds as did the original 3 rocketeers on the moon.... except in the famed interview where they look extremely uncomfortable and unhappy

www.brasscheck.com/video/...ronauts-press-conference/

as if following orders they'd really rather not.
