AR spoke perjoratively abou SSI benefits as "handouts" and "welfare," but:

She left an inheritance of somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million; she was not broke at the time of her death.

She took a total of $11,002 in Social Security between 1974 and 1982. I am not certain how much was taken from her over the course of her life, but it was more than that. She did so because Social Security is a legalized Ponzi scheme, stealing from the young to give to the old, and she was stolen from. Whenever the State offers an opportunity to obtain a partial restitution, victims should take it.

At inception of SS there were about 25 putting in to each person taking out. Now the ratio is 3 to 1. Soon SS will be a welfare program.

When I worked for State of Illinois on Highways in winter time, we had to do shift changes every week so everyone got a shot at the over time.

Sometimes those weekly checks would run around $1,200. On weekends there was no night shift and we had to work 18 hours Saturday into Sunday and Sunday into Monday. Shifts changed at 1330 hours on Saturday afternoon. It was blood money and the deductions were horrifying. Saturday into Sunday was always time and a half. ;)
