Scalia just gave the finger in church yesterday (not kidding)

by John in DC - 3/27/2006 12:34:00 PM

You gotta be kidding me. This is the family values justice that Bush embraces? I'm not a Christian conservative by any means, I'm a regular old Christian, and the thought of flipping somebody off in church, minutes after receiving the Eucharist, is just, well, beyond shocking, insulting, infuriating. You don't do that kind of thing.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia startled reporters in Boston just minutes after attending a mass, by flipping a middle finger to his critics.

A Boston Herald reporter asked the 70-year-old conservative Roman Catholic if he faces much questioning over impartiality when it comes to issues separating church and state.

"You know what I say to those people?" Scalia replied, making the obscene gesture and explaining "That's Sicilian."

The 20-year veteran of the high court was caught making the gesture by a photographer with The Pilot, the Archdiocese of Boston's newspaper.

"Don't publish that," Scalia told the photographer, the Herald said.
Scalia owes every Christian an apology. If a "gay activist" had done this, it would be the headlines around the world and the gay community would be apologizing for it for the next 20 years.

Scalia owes every Christian an apology. And frankly, in view of his recent public rants about Guantanamo Bay, I'm starting to wonder if Scalia isn't becoming a bit unhinged.

President Bush, is this still your favorite justice?

Religious right, is he still yours?

Or don't you people care about the sanctity of church?

Justice Scalia flips the finger in church

BOSTON, March 27 (UPI) -- U.S.

He was attending a special mass for lawyers and politicians at Cathedral of the Holy Cross, and afterward was the keynote speaker at the Catholic Lawyers' Guild luncheon.

Indeed. No reporters allowed!

Thomas has been my favorite for a while.

Youre saying that you indeed like Scalia?

Yep, I saw that. He's got a point. It is absolutely nuts, to those that feel themselves to be at war. Course the quandry he finds himself in wouldn't exist if the American people on the whole considered themselves at war, and we'd had a formal declaration of war, rather than the fig leaf of the congressional authorization for force. Technical arguments for better treatment of prisoners are a natural unintended consequence of technical justifications for war. Can hardly expect war entered easily to have wide and deep support and be prosecuted with vigor.

I'd expect people with kin on the sharp end generally to agree with him.

It might be unusual to give enemy combatants a jury trial, but we don't have to do that. If we do the usual thing, and treat them as conventional POW's with the protections of the Geneva Conventions, there's no reason to put them on trial.

Perhaps a few of them are guilty of war crimes, and those we should try. But the rest are either innocent people who should be released, or normal prisoners of war who should be treated as such.
