(03-27) 12:46 PST Los Angeles (AP) --

Tens of thousands of students walked out of school in California and other states Monday, waving flags and chanting slogans in a second week of protests against legislation to crack down on illegal immigrants.

In Washington, 100 demonstrators wore handcuffs at the Capitol to protest a bill that would make it a felony to be in this country illegally and would make it crime to dispense aid to the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants.

Immigrant supporters also object to legislation that would also impose new penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and would build fences along part of the U.S.-Mexican border.

More than 500,000 people gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, and tens of thousands rallied in Phoenix and Milwaukee last week.

On Monday, California's Cesar Chavez Day, at least 8,500 students marched out of eight Los Angeles-area schools, including the San Fernando Valley and the wealthy coastal enclave of Pacific Palisades, said Monica Carazo, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles school district.

By midmorning, the protests had spread to downtown, where hundreds of students walked the streets and chanted. The boycott had the tacit approval of school officials in some of the heavily Hispanic downtown schools, where word was passed through hall posters and public address systems.

In some areas, teachers and administrators walked with students "as a safety measure," Carazo said.

A few schools chose to bar their doors to prevent walkouts. Officials at Huntington Park High School locked the gates after classes started, but the students climbed over a chain-link fence and joined marchers in their heavily immigrant community.

Police went on a citywide alert, but no major confrontations reported.

Hundreds of teenagers also walked out of several high schools in Dallas and headed for a rally at a park, some carrying Mexican flags and others posters calling for Congress to recognize immigrant rights.

In Detroit, protesters waving Mexican flags marched from the southwest side of the city where many Hispanics live toward a federal building downtown.

"We are illegal immigrants if you trace our heritage all the way back, but we are here and we are working and we are living the American dream," said Janet Padron, a 22-year-old Allen Park resident.

"Do you see the community?" Padron asked, pointing to the thousands of people around her. "Do you see how many people didn't go to work today?"

Why should the illegal immigrants get taxpayer funded aid?

What amazes me is that there are people coming right out in the newspaper and declaring themselves and their families to be illegals. They should simply be picked up and immediately deported. As for all these "teenagers" (many of whom are probably in their twenties) if they are illegals, they should not be in our public schools. Send a few busloads around for them too.

I don't know what it is going to take to get the people in this god forsaken country to realize that we have been INVADED. Aside from a few souls like the folks on this board, no one seems to give a shit about America anymore. She's like the neighborhood floozy everybody takes a turn with.

It's compassionate conservatism at work.. of course they're compassionate with any one but American citizens..

They should simply be picked up and immediately deported.

They aren't winning any friends down in California.

People who last week were in favor of a guest worker program to help these, and I quote, "Poor people just trying to feed their families" are now buying guns, contacting the Minutemen, and boiling in anger.

The protests are backfiring.

I'm really glad to hear that. That's what I was hoping as I know it's pissing the hell out of me. It used to be that people were grateful for the opportunity to come to the US - just to COME here - and sleep on the streets. I can't believe these Mexicans think they can come here, ignore our laws, protest in our streets, tell OUR elected officials what to do, and try to browbeat US into submission. I'm sure if we tried to sneak into Mexico they'd probably machine gun us at the border.

FReepers are going WILD over this...if they're still this angry in November, the Democrats are going to pick up 60 seats in the HOuse...maybe more. I'm thinking about posting "Don't blame me, I voted for Peroutka" over there later on. Wonder how 'Boteye' is doing at LP?

They actually enforce their immigration laws and the Mexican Army patrols their southern Border. Can't have any of those 250,000 Belizians sneaking in, ya know.

This is a complete backfire on the part of the illegals; they stood up before the goodies were 'in the bag' for them.

Now everyone is racing to yell at their CongressCritters and saying "DEPORT DEPORT DEPORT"

Legal immigrants I know who had a soft spot for the illegals are now doing a violent about-face.

The Sleeping Tiger is awakening and he is extremely pissed off at being taken advantage of.

After what we've seen the last few days, I would expect a considerable backlash.

I see all the kids whitey chose not to have.

You see, for every three or four rednecks who think that all African-Americans are Willie Horton; there are one or two white liberals who think that all African-Americans are Langston Hughes. Both sides are, of course, wrong. All African-Americans are, in fact, Jimmy "J.J." Walker.

people are out protesting in favor of the new laws they're brewing in washington. but those new laws are poison. all they're going to do is turn the 'illegal' portion of the workforce into indentured servants (semi-slaves). Whose interest does it serve to give the employers indentured servants whenever they desire. It serves nobody's interest except the employers.

The illegal immigrants are protesting in favor of themselves becoming indentured servants instead of free labor. The anti-immigrant natives are shilling for these indentured servitude systems too.

We are bamboozled.

Oh my, this I gotta see. Their excuses for him up till now have been, "Well he isn't running for reelection anymore, so piss on anyone who doesn't like him or his policies". You just gotta love it.

Believe it or not, the most vocal folks I'm hearing from are *Asian*.

All of the Hong Kongers and Taiwanese I know are blowing gaskets - several at a time.

Of course, they came here legally....

Asa Hutchison stopped the roundups in Riverside and San Bernardino counties about 2 years ago. Entire classrooms were empty, the teachers were upset.
