When I worked for State of Illinois, there were deer all over the place on the west end near Fox River. One time when out on night patrol I was rolling north on Rte. 31 toward Algonquin. There was a corn field off to the left. Shadows started moving between me and oncoming headlights. The deer were feeding in the corn field and then went down to the river to water. One time I was making a left turn from Hwy 68 to go north on Hwy 25. There was a big doe on side of road grazing. There was a chain link fence with golf course behind it. The strobe lights must have spooked her and she ran right in front of me. I clipped her with the plow. She skidded into paved median. By the time I turned around and got back there she had her last gasp. So I called Joe, the Foreman over there. He said, "Are you sure she's dead? I don't want to get kicked." I said, "Yeah. See her eyes are open. They always die with their eyes open." We threw her on the tailgate of the pick up and drove about a quarter mile over to the gravel pit. I puled her off in the clean bank of snow and cut off the hind quarters. I ran rest of night with heater off and took them home and aged them in refrigerator a few days. I gave one the neighbor and he cooked me up a big plate of stew. He fed his family too. The other one I brought into the yard. We had a guy there that used to be a butcher.
