A man was entering a QuikTrip convenience store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, around 3 a.m. Monday to get breakfast for his children when another man stopped him and asked for gas money, KOTV-TV reported.
The man walking into the store refused, the station said, and entered the store. But when he exited the store, things got hairy. The man who had just asked him for money was now demanding money from him — and did so wielding a knife, KOTV said.
However, this particular victim was anything but — and fought off the suspect with his bare hands, KTUL-TV reported.
KOTV said the victim tried getting away on his bicycle, but the suspect got into his car and drove after him, hitting the victim's arm.
Oops At some point police said the suspect actually called 911 and claimed to be the victim, KTUL reported.
When officers arrived at the scene and spoke to witnesses, they determined the 911 caller actually was the alleged attacker, KTUL added. Police also reviewed surveillance footage, KOTV said.
With that, police arrested Jose Ramon Espada-Laporte and booked him into the Tulsa County Jail, KTUL said.
Espanda-Laporte was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon, KOTV reported, adding that he had served 18 years for manslaughter.
Police told KTUL that the victim in Monday morning's incident suffered minor injuries.
