Hiker disappears in Northern California mountains on 5-day hike

Authorities suspended search-and-rescue operations for a missing hiker in the mountains of Northern California on Friday night, but said they planned to return to the area on Saturday.

© Trinity County Sheriff's Office Daniel Komins, 35, went on a hiking trip in the Trinity Alps in Northern California on Aug. 10, 2019, and has not been seen since the following day. He was expected to return Wednesday.

Daniel Komins had embarked on a solo hiking trip in the Trinity Alps, about 75 miles northwest of Redding, on Aug. 10. He has not been seen since one day later when backpackers told the Trinity County Sheriff's Office they had seen him on the trail.

The 34-year-old, who is an experienced hiker, also spoke to his girlfriend on the night of Aug. 11 and "informed her that the trip was going as planned," according to the sheriff's office.

He was expected to return from the hike on Aug. 14.

Komins' empty car was found near the trailhead on the same day, officials said. He had food, water and backpacking supplies with him on the hike.

"Komins is an experienced hiker and an Emergency Medical Technician," the sheriff's office said. "He has with him a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker, which is not presently operating appropriately. Komins also has with him his cellular telephone, which has seen no activity since August 11, 2019."

The search-and-rescue efforts began at daylight on Thursday and continued throughout the day on Friday with no success.

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Trinity County Search, Butte County Search and Rescue, Marin County Search and Rescue, Contra Costa County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol have all been involved in the search, which has included ground and helicopter teams.

Forty people were involved in the ground search on Friday, the sheriff's office said.

Officials said they were widening the search area after speaking with the other hikers who had crossed paths with Komins on Aug. 11.

"Based on the information provided by these individuals, additional areas have been plotted to be searched, as it appears that Komins may have deviated from his initial itinerary," officials said.

The search was set to resume at sunrise on Saturday.

In my cowardly opinion, asking for serious trouble -- esp. with ppl as crazy as they are nowadays.

Are the national parks safe, even for groups of ppl? A guy named David Paulides passionately charts "mysterious disappearances" in them, others say he's full of it.

I know it. And it's not just National Parks that are bad.

Trying to hitch a ride on the road with a trucker is even more dangerous. You never know what kind of freak is behind the wheel nowadays.

I picked up a girl at Flying J on I-40 in Arkansas. She was out with some driver. He decided he was going home so he dumped her out there. She lived in Indianapolis.

I got her a shower at Flying J west of Nashville. Then she told me she wanted me to drop her at the T/A in downtown Nashville. I knew about that place. Once in a while they would find a dead body out back. I told her, "That would be a bad idea. The bitches in that truck stop would eat you alive. You come up the road with me and I will find you a ride."

We went up to the QT Fuel Stop at I-24 and I-75. I put out a broadcast on the CB that I had a girl that needed to get to Indianapolis.

The first one to come back was a black guy. She was shaking her head "No" so I had to turn him down.

The next one was a steel hauler, hauling coil steel from Ohio south. He was empty and headed back north and he was riding with his boy.

I told her, "He will get you where you need to go." She gave me a big hug, jumped out of the truck and ran over and climbed up in the other tractor.

It was a good deed. ;)
