Whoa! gasbuddy.com says that Austin's lowest is $2.03 and the average is $2.30 for regular unleaded.

When I was a kid we went into Oklahoma. Gas wars were going on and a gallon was 19 cents. We will never see those days again. ;)

I bet you remember the fake gas wars of the Carter era -- red, green or yellow flags at stations, people beating each other up at pumps. Did some shoot guns? :)

the Carter era

In late 70s I was running a lot of odd jobs with my Blazer. I did custom roto- tilling in the spring and fall. I ran newspaper relays for local news agency and I did cosmetics deliveries for this woman in the old neighborhood.

She had purple fluid that would take kinks out of black's hair. She is dead a long time since she was in my Mom and Dad's age group. I wonder who bought her formula for the purple fluid?

My sister told me her son got married and he did not want to live there so he sold the house. It was Victorian-style house. Thee guy that bought it had it torn down. I bet she is spinning in her grave.

During the time I was running newspaper relays gas prices shot up about 50 cents a gallon and I had to ask for more cash from them. I got extra $10 a week. It does not seem like much but gas was less than $1 a gallon back then. ;)

In the early/mid sixties in north TX, 19-20/gal gas was a common thing.

But looking at the time value of money, that's about like $2 now, isn't it?

According to TX Monthly magazine, Buc-ee's is now more of a destination than a pit stop, and is going to soon rule the world!

Some local entities have sued them for destroying their fuel sales with such low, they allege below cost, pricing.

The consumer really doesn't care.
