Braves' Culberson carted off after taking pitch to face on bunt attempt

Atlanta Braves infielder Charlie Culberson was carted off the field after Washington Nationals reliever Fernando Rodney hit him in the face with a pitch during a bunt attempt in the seventh inning of Saturday's game at Nationals Park.

Culberson, 30, had just entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Mike Foltynewicz and squared to attempt a sacrifice bunt on the first pitch. He failed to avoid Rodney's 91-mph fastball, however, as it struck him square in the face.

Training staff from both teams tended to Culberson during a long delay before he was helped to his feet. He gave a thumbs-up while being carted off as Braves trainer George Poulis held a towel to his nose.

Home plate umpire Tim Timmons called the pitch a strike, ruling Culberson had gone around while trying to duck out of the way. The call infuriated Braves manager Brian Snitker, who was ejected for protesting.

Adam Duvall took over Culberson's at-bat with an 0-1 count, eventually striking out.

Poster Comment:

If Culberson was hit by a pitch he should have been given the base. Why no pinch runner?

Not if it's ruled that he swung, I suppose, which is why it was ruled a strike instead.

From what I know about the game, arguing balls and strikes is an immediate ejection. ;)

Just because a batter spins to avoid the pitch and in doing so happens to move his bat across the plate does not mean that he swung at or attempted to hit the pitch - even if the bat passes completely over the plate. If the pitch is not in the strike zone and if the umpire judges that the batter was attempting to avoid getting hit rather than attempting to bunt at (or swing at) the pitch, he is hit by the pitch. The ball is dead and the batter is entitled to first base.

If the batter was hit by the pitch, the ball is dead. The Ump cannot call it a ball or strike. Not sure if the Braves can appeal to the league or not. ;)

I saw the video, and as it was an attempted bunt, he had already turned to prepare for that. I believe in this case, if it's a bad pitch, the batter must retract the position to avoid it being called a strike.

Looking at it again, the batter did not retract. And it must be pointed out that he wasn't hit by the ball until after the batter missed hitting the ball.

But whatever. There are better & more important things to argue about in life... hehe.
