Title: Commenters blow Fred Reed to bits: "Let’s Invade Mexico!"

I suppose that by now everyone has heard of Trump’s offer to send the American military to “wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth,” which he asserts can be done “quickly and effectively. “

Trump phrased this as an offer to help, not a threat to invade, which is reassuring. AMLO, Mexico’s president, wisely declined the offer.

While the President seems to have made the offer in good faith, he has little idea of Mexico, the military, or the cartels. The American military could not come close to wiping them off the face of the earth, much less effectively and quickly. Such an incursion would be a political and military disaster. The President needs to do some reading.

If AMLO were to invite the Americans into Mexico, he would be lynched. Few Americans are aware of how much the United States is hated in Latin America, and for that matter in most of the world. They don’t know of the long series of military interventions, brutal dictators imposed and supported, and economic rapine. Somoza, Pinochet, the Mexican-American War, detachment of Panama from Colombia, bombardment of Veracruz, Patton’s incursion–the list could go on for pages. The Mexican public would look upon American troops not as saviors but as invaders. Which they would be.

The incursion would not defeat the cartels, for several reasons that trump would do well to ponder. To begin with, America starts its wars by overestimating its own powers, underestimating the enemy, and misunderstanding the kind of war on which it is embarking. The is exactly what Trump seems to be doing.......

I really can't believe the way they talk to him. Have never seen this in Unz, Takimag or whatever, though I've seen tons of flaming elsewhere.

There's little to no doubt that Trump made the offer in jest, having no illusions that Mexico would accept. I'd say anyone not seeing that is still treating Trump like a politician.

The offer was certainly a brag about US military power, and maybe an underhanded suggestion to Mexico that it should use it's own military. I would agree though that Trump probably does underestimate the difficulty of destroying the cartels. The only thing that will do that is drug decriminalization in Mexico.

Decriminalization here would be much more effective.

To me, the various cartels seem to be the de facto rulers of MX.

If we did invade Mexico, would all the Mexicans go back home to fight us, or would we have invaders actually showing what they are, on our American City Streets?

Because I am going to tell you, I have witnessed first hand armed illegals here in the city and they are not just the local drug dealing pieces of garbage. They are illegal aliens who are armed for something else. I am willing to bet, when the numbers are high enough, they will indeed wage their own little war against America, and not one government official will stop them after it starts.

True, but the US doesn't get reamed as much as Mexico does with it being illegal. We don't have hundreds of thousands dead because of drugs whereas they do.

Right -- it's just our presidential blowhard blowing hard on another subject. Even so I found the article keenly interesting re life in Mexico.... and of course my other main point was commenters' vitriol against this legendary and (I thought) beloved commentator.

I guess the poor man has little or no eyesight, a result of his Vietnam involvement.

Like everything DC does, it would only bring more chaos and disaster. And you're right, these vaunted 'new Americans' who 'only want a better life for their children' would start showing their true colors in a heartbeat -- just like the ones who started fleeing back to their home countries when the US economy started to tank in 2008.

You're forgetting something, Rambo -- ameriKa is a total military failure anymore, and this drug mess is the fault of DC's drug and border policies to begin with.

ameriKans' personal decadence is to blame too. As somebody said on this, problem solved if amerika will simply give up substance abuse.

Maybe Trump should formally recognize the cartel leaders as the official government of Mexico. That would open up all kinds of possibilities. Negotiations which would include the possibility of border closures, sanctions and declarations of war.

Pardon El Chapo and bring him to the White House to sort things out, why not? nothing else is working.
