Only movie that has come out in the last 25 years that I actually want to watch.

When the Future Was Faster - Steve Sailer

2019 was supposed to be Hollywood’s year of Intersectional Diversity, but the handful of good films—such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, The Irishman, and now Ford v Ferrari—keep turning out to be period pieces about straight white men made for straight white men by straight white men.

Reliable Matt Damon plays Texan race-car impresario Carroll Shelby (one of the more glamorous names I recall from my 1968–1970 Car Craze years), and Christian Bale is inspired as Shelby’s hotheaded English test driver Ken Miles.

While sizable opening-weekend audiences gave this buddy picture an A+ CinemaScore grade, presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg’s media empire was incensed by it. Hannah Elliott complained in Bloomberg that the hit film dared to lack today’s obligatory Diversity-Inclusion-Equity (DIE):

But what I saw is a devastating picture of the lack of diversity that permeated the industry in the 1960s…. Because ‘Ford v Ferrari’ shows a generation best left dead and gone.

She went on:

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1569429207754-0'); });

Picture this: …men dominate the screen for 98% of the time, by my unofficial count. They are in the executive suites at Ford and Ferrari, in the workshops and garages in Venice, on the track out at Willow Springs Raceway. (And when I say men, I mean white, straight men.)

Well, yeah, the Ford that went 218 mph way back in 1965 was built by white, straight men.

Guilty as charged....

Guilty and proud of it.

That engine and car must have been screaming.

And I know it did not have governors on it like Swift big trucks do. LOL

That was the Mk II, with the 427, which did not rev nearly as high as the earlier 289s. Must have had something like a 2.30:1 final drive.

(Well, my guess was close, it was actually 2.77:1)

For a race like Le Mans, first gear would be about 1.45:1 for an upshift speed of 135 mph. (ibid)

Wow! Most cars would blow the engine running first to 35mph.

My old Blazer had a straight 6, three on the tree and a 4:11 rear end. And lock out hubs too. I went ridge running in Arkansas with it and went out to New Mexico to collect minerals at the old Blanchard Mine in Bingham, New Mexico.

The guy I sold it to pulled out the six and put in a V-8. He blew up the rear end and then couldn't find parts. He got drunk in Wisconsin, went off the road and hit a tree and killed himself. No idea what ever happened to his two kids. They likely grew up as delinquents. ;)

4:11 is great for drag racing (or pulling stumps), but it would drive me crazy having the engine turn at 4800rpm doing 60.

I don't know since I did not have a tach on there. I had the engine rebuilt once and it blew up later on. Those guys did a lousy job on it. ;)

Larger diameter tires on a truck would offset that some, but I remember riding in a buddy's Torino with 4.31 gears and it sounded like the engine was maxed out at normal highway speeds.

I had larger diameter tires on the Blazer than the stock tires. It screwed up the speedometer and the readings on the dash were a few MPH off. That helped me to beat a ticket once since the cop realized the size of tires made a difference. He was smarter than the average bear. LOL

We had an electric race track backwheniwuzzakid, with Shelby GTs as the cars. We took out the rear pins so the cars would spin out if you took a curve too fast. Great times.

I like the article, but the trailer left me a little cold. There's no way Iacocca whimpered like that. He was every bit as pugnacious as anyone else in that saga. He was fired as President of Ford by Henry II for that very reason.

Yeah, me too. The last time I was in a movie theater was for "Alien" 1979, I think. Hell, it probably costs $5.00 to see a movie now.

Dakkie, since you're 4um's resident gearhead, check out Elon Musk's latest abomination called "CyberTruck" on EweToob and let us know your thoughts. It oughtta be hilarious.

I'd get one, but the damn thing is 19.3' long. I'd have to take out the wall between my garage and kitchen to be able to fit it in the joint. My little '93 GMC Sonoma (S-10) is only about 16' long. In Musk's presentation, this honker dwarfs an F-150 4-door. Probably bigger than an HMMWV.

If the kooky bastard would make me a three-quarter scale one, I'd be happy to test it for him for a low wage.

I'm ready to roll on this project since I only wear black and already have a black, Kakadu Trading Australian oilskin duster. I should fit in nicely with Mr. Gloomy.

I don't know if that happened or not, but I doubt it. If he'd only developed the Mustang, he'd be an automotive giant, but to then go to Chrysler and save its bacon with the mini-van and their (semi-crappy) k-cars, he became a real industry legend.

When I was having to take care of my mother when she was getting busy dying, I bought a new '13 Toyota Tacoma and outfitted it in my spare time, making the ultimate service truck. Worked good, looked awesome.

Long story, short, "Texting Woman" hit me head on in my Honda Fit "job estimating car" on the way to check on mom for the last time of the day. Fucking Honda engineers, they should've let me die. WY1 still has less than 10k mi on it.

Sidenote: I showed my truck to my best friend, a hotshot engineer with a local defense contractor. He saw tht it had manual windows and door locks... Called it "quaint". Told him that "I'll never have to take the doors apart replacing $300 motors for something I can just lean over to do." I guess he's gone now. Oy blyat!

Never saw a buggy in Goshen, mostly north of there. Cruisers on the main drag on Friday night were a problem trying to get home from working though.

Got a lot of Amish NE of FW at Menard's & the stores on 37 before Harlin.

(Edit) Check WANE.com, I guess a buggy just got dusted off north of Harlin.

He went to the gas station and put gasoline in the diesel pick up. They had to drain the tanks after that debacle.

I did just the opposite back in 1978 - before they made the car gas tank intake idiot proof. Topped off the tank of my '67 VW Microbus in Newberry, MI (U.P.) probably 10 gallons or so.

Caught my mistake before I took off - drained the tank, filled it with gas and good to go. Gave back the diesel, but still had to pay for it.
