An Indian film-maker has been slammed for suggesting 'rape without violence' should be legalised and that women should carry condoms and 'co-operate' with sex attackers.

Daniel Shravan made the comments after the body of vet Priyanka Reddy, 27, was found charred under an overpass near Hyderabad in India after she was raped and murdered by men who had offered to help her with a puncture last week.

The film-maker, in a series of now-deleted posts, said that 'rape is not a serious thing, but murder is inexcusable' adding that 'the government should legalise rape without violence for the safety of women.'

His comments have been widely condemned (above and below), with the official #MeTooIndia Twitter account saying: 'He is advocating rape as punishment for women. What will it take to make women feel safe? How many men will be let off?'

He added that women should 'cooperate with rapists and carry condoms' with them.

'If you are about to get raped, hand over a condom to the rapist and cooperate with him while he fulfils his sexual desire. That way he will not try to harm you,' he said.

Shravan argued, as momentum gathers to toughen up laws for the safety of women in India, that more stringent rape laws will not deter the incidents of rape in the country.

'It is foolishness of the government to think that killing Veerappan will control smuggling, killing Osama Bin Laden will control terrorism. In the same way, the laws against rape can't control rapes,' he said.

He instead suggested that the Government should pass a law 'to control deaths after rape', suggesting that 'when the sexual desire is fulfilled men wouldn't kill women'.

The Government of India is currently frightening rapists, he claimed. He said that 'rapists are not finding a way to get their bodily sexual desires and [are] getting these killing thoughts. He added: 'Better, women should accept men's sex'.

His comments have been widely condemned, with the official #MeTooIndia Twitter account saying: 'He is advocating rape as punishment for women. What will it take to make women feel safe? How many men will be let off?'

And other Twitter users labelling his comments 'disgusting'. One said: 'What kind of sick mentality does he have? Disgusting and disturbing. I am tired of this misogyny and victim blaming.'

He made the comments after the body of vet Priyanka Reddy, 27, was found charred under an overpass near Hyderabad in India after she was raped and murdered by men who had offered to help her with a puncture last week While another said: 'If he is a filmmaker I promise will never watch his films and I can vouch for my family and friend.'

His comments came as an Indian MP called for the men who raped and murdered young veterinarian Priyanka Reddy to be 'brought out in public and lynched', after the victim's mother called for the monsters who committed the horrific crime to be burned alive.

Priyanka was on her way home when she was gang-raped and killed near Hyderabad and her body was dumped and burned 15 miles away.

Four men have since been arrested, including lorry driver Mohammed Pasha. MP Jaya Bachchan prescribed a strong punishment for the perpetrators of the crime, saying in Parliament on Monday: 'I know it sounds harsh, but these kind of people should be brought out in public and lynched.'

Other MPs from across India's political spectrum condemned the crime during the parliamentary sitting. It came as many took to the streets of New Delhi today to demand justice for Priyanka and demand a fast-track investigation in the case, as well as stringent laws for the safety of women in India.

'We are not safe anymore in India. We are scared to move out of our homes,' said Sejal Kumar, a college student.

Police recovered Priyanka's clothes, shoes and a bottle near a toll road on Thursday morning where she had parked her motorbike, and her family could only identify her by a locket she was wearing. Share This: (3 images)
