[Note: The following comment was submitted to a post on Saturday by Gregg W. Updike, a Navy veteran who served from 1983 to 1987. Gregg was on the USS America CV-66 when Ronald Reagan bombed Libya. This posting is a day late, given that Pearl Harbor Day was yesterday, but Gregg shared many thoughts that Americans should ponder these 78 years later.]

Don’t forget to “Remember Pearl Harbor” 78 years ago today; which resulted in our last formerly declared war a day later.

The results of that attack was paid back in less than four years with the total defeat of Japan and her Axis partners Germany and Italy.

Sadly, we left that war unfinished when we had the opportunity to be a true “arsenal of democracy” and defeat all totalitarian states for the foreseeable future at little additional cost (the Red Army was an exhausted force on the verge of collapse/revolt, and Mao’s China was a nonfactor). We won the war with our blood and treasure and gave away the peace with ink. Arguably more people ultimately lived under the tyranny of communism after the partial victory over dictatorships than before when our first communist president gave away the eastern half of Europe to the thug Stalin at Yalta in early 1945 with Truman basically sealing the deal at Potsdam later that year.

Hindsight is 20-20, and America in 1945 was “war-weary”, but Patton and Churchill, among others, saw the true evil that was on the horizon. Churchill was defeated and Patton was “accidented” as [a precursor to being Arkancided] to clear the way for the “New World Order”.

Since the Cold War started in 1945, 90% of the world’s problems of violence and unrest can be traced directly to Moscow! Examples are:

Active support of Mao in China after the Japanese defeat and withdrawal – USSR provided Mao with the captured Japanese Army’s weapons to use against Chang guaranteeing a communist China by 1950.

This lead directly to the 1950-1953 and beyond, Korean War. Both Mao’s China and Stalin’s USSR supported the first, and succeeding, Kims in North Korea.

USSR fomented world-wide third world violence and chaos by arming millions of insurgents with the famous AK-47 and other weaponry.

Several other USSR supported happenings during the Cold War and beyond:

Europe’s Iron Curtain, Cuba, numerous Latin and South America coups, insurrections, overthrows…, virtually the whole region is an economic disaster with not one strong or vibrant democracy!

USSR/Russian support to Israel’s Arab enemies, basically since 1947 and Afghanistan, just to name a select few overt actions.

And the covert infiltration of America’s education system (once the envy of the world – now ranked 17th), media, commercial/business (Chamber of Commerce), entertainment, political, and other institutions, and support of virtually every radical group active in the bringing down of our republic today with its money laundered through Soros front organizations with the silent support of several US presidents and the collective Deep State.

Over 100,000 American military and civilian deaths fighting USSR backed communist aggression since WWII, and the USSR was our “ally” and was saved from total defeat to Germany.

These are some thoughts to ponder when we think about the far ranging effects of that “Day of Infamy” 78 years ago.

PS: The USSR/Russia has the economic might equivalent to California, or Italy, and about half our population, so one must ask, how can they be such a threat to the US and to world peace and prosperity, without the help of globalist organizations like the UN, EU, and our Deep State?

If Hitler had been wise enough to conduct a separate peace with France, he probably could have defeated Russia.

Impossible. Germany was in a two front war.

Russia moved all of its war manufacturing east of the Ural Mountains. These mountains were 800 miles from Moscow.

Rommel in France recognized the gently sloping beaches in Normandy as being ideal for a beach landing and ordered the defenses to be beefed up.

The U.S. had Omaha Beach and casualties were 2,000 dead. My Dad's Uncle was supposed to be in the Normandy invasion but he was sick and could not go. It likely saved his life.

The Allies made a few tactical blunders also, such as waiting to drop bombs on Omaha Beach which caused them to detonate several hundred yards beyond the beach.

Germany thought the invasion would come at Calais. And when the ships appeared at dawn off the coast of Normandy it caused Hitler to have a headache, and he was indisposed and unable to give the orders to release the Panzers.

This was the main problem with a dictatorship. ;)

by 1944 more than a few were tired of adolph - from wiki -

On 20 July 1944, Adolf Hitler and his top military associates entered the briefing hut of the Wolf's Lair military headquarters, a series of concrete bunkers and shelters located deep in the forest East Prussia, not far from the World War I Battle of Tannenberg.[1] Suddenly there was an enormous explosion, which killed three officers and a stenographer, and injured everyone else.[1] This assassination attempt was the work of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an aristocrat who had been severely wounded – losing his right hand, left eye, and two fingers of his left hand – while serving in the North African theater of war.[1]

The bomb plot was a carefully planned coup d'état attempt against the Nazi regime, orchestrated by a group of army officers.[1] Their plan was to assassinate Hitler, seize power in Berlin, establish a new pro-Western government and save Germany from the total defeat.[1]

Immediately after arresting and executing the plot leaders in Berlin, the Gestapo, the secret police force of Nazi Germany, began arresting people involved or even suspected of being involved.[2] The opportunity was also used to eliminate other Nazi critics remaining.[2] In total, an estimated 7,000 people were arrested of which approximately 4,980 were executed, some slowly strangled with piano wire on Hitler's insistence.[3] Among those executed were three field marshals, nineteen generals, twenty-six colonels, two ambassadors, seven diplomats, one minister and three secretaries of state, as well as the head of the Berlin police.

Here's an more detailed account of that day -

I imagine this was a hard hit on the Wehrmacht. But it also opened up opportunities for other to advance in the ranks. ;)

The argument about conducting a separate peace with France is that Hitler would not have had to worry about a Normandy invasion. The French may have surrendered easily to the Germans but they would have fought to the last man to keep the English off their soil. Thus he could have pulled his troops out of France and sent them east.

The German upper crust which composed the officer corps looked down on Hitler but tolerated him as long as he was winning the war.

But you must see that French Communists fought the Germans and the Americans alike.

So the French would have fought to keep the English out? Why then were they in northern France fighting the Germans before the evacuations at Dunkirk? ;)

Are you sure Hitler committed suicide?

From reading the Gestapo Chief books by Gregory Douglas, I can tell you unequivocally that Heinrich Mueller, former Chief of Gestapo, who escaped to Switzerland and was interrogated there in 1946 by U.S. representatives, that Hitler escaped to Spain.

And I could not resist peeking, Schwerin von Krosigk was head of the short-lived Flensburg government after the end of the war.

You got me on that one Cyni. Good bit of trivia. ;)

You are right. Karl Donitz was head of Germany for less than a month.

He was later convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg trials. ;)

Mark Clark was slipped into French North Africa to gauge the sentiment of the officers. He found all sorts of opinions from Nazi sympathizers to communists. The only opinion that united them all was hatred for the English.

The French were our enemy in North Africa. They even sank their own battleships so we could not use them. Hitler did NOT occupy all of France, Petain and the rest were happy to be puppets. The ONLY French resistance to the Germans were the Communists. When the Germans invaded France, the French ran like rabbits. Sorry lot.

The cowardly French ran like rabbits when Hitler came calling.

The French then went to work building trucks etc etc for German military.

Check the record for what Ike thot of Free French Army.

They were willing to lag behind, do nothing, let the Americans and Brits die freeing France. Ike threatened to shut off their food unless they moved.

Ike, Patton etc had no use for French army.

Bomb failed to kill Hitler because the table was huge and had huge solid wooden legs. One leg deflected the blast away from Hitler.

more on the bomb failure

Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, chief of the army reserve, had been given the task of planting a bomb during a conference that was to be held at Berchtesgaden, but was later moved to Hitler’s “Wolf’s Lair, a command post at Rastenburg, Prussia. Stauffenberg planted the explosive in a briefcase, which he placed under a table, then left quickly. Hitler was studying a map of the Eastern front as Colonel Heinz Brandt, trying to get a better look at the map, moved the briefcase out of place, farther away from where the Fuhrer was standing.

At 12:42 p.m. the bomb went off. When the smoke cleared, Hitler was wounded, charred, and even suffered the temporary paralysis of one arm—but he was very much alive. (He was even well enough to keep an appointment with Benito Mussolini that very afternoon. He gave Il Duce a tour of the bomb site.) Four others present died from their wounds.

Getting olde...I had forgotten that someone else had moved the bomb to near a table leg. Even generals were not allowed to carry firearms in Hitlers presence.

Albert Speer was only man allowed close to Hitler and he was thinking of assassinating him.
