Theres an old saying that Generals are always preparing to fight the last war. Well, theres a related and previously unknown phenomenon developing within the US military which is that the Generals are preparing to fight the wrong next war. To give some credit where credit is due, the US military is devoting a fair amount of effort to preparing to fight the next war. The problem is that the next war that our military envisions is one entirely of their own creation rather than one defined by consideration of the enemys capabilities and intent. Were not preparing to fight the war that China and Russia are going to deliver; were preparing to fight the war that we want to see: a war of high technology, with lots of cross-domain buzzwords, artificial intelligence assisted joint battle command, with dispersed, small, flexible, light units creating havoc deep within enemy territory, tiny unmanned vehicles roving the air, land, and sea and applying nearly magical capabilities, all supported by an exquisite, ephemeral network providing perfect situational awareness. What kind of war are the Russians and Chinese preparing to deliver? Theyre building heavier and heavier armored units with more, bigger, and far more lethal conventional explosives delivered by massed artillery and ballistic missiles. The Chinese are building for a war of attrition and are on a quick path to outnumbering us in every category of military capability. The Russians are telling us exactly what kind of war theyll deliver with their semi-proxy invasion of Ukraine. Its a war of unimaginable destruction delivered by artillery supported by electronic warfare and UAVs, all backed by heavy armored units. Entire mechanized units are wiped out in seconds. Our enemies are preparing to employ lethal battlefield unmanned vehicles without a care for unintended casualties. In short, our enemies are preparing to deliver a war with massive firepower, heavy armored units, widespread and effective electronic warfare, and Terminator style unmanned killing machines. Now look at the kind of war games were conducting. Were preparing to conduct the first multi-domain command and control exercise, Cross Domain One. The Air Force will lead the first experiment of Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) capabilities in two weeks, tying fighter jets to Army ground systems and Navy ships in a real-world example of Multi-Domain Operations. Preston Dunlap, Air Force chief architect for acquisition, told Breaking D that the exercise in Florida will be powered by the services nascent Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS). Our idea of heavy firepower is the 30 mm machine gun that weve so proudly stuck on the Strykers and dubbed Dragoon. I did not see WHERE this massive strike will be delivered? Did I miss it?
With that sort of equipment sounds like Middle East. Possibly Russia itself--heavy armored units need flat space.
Difficult for me to read, did I gather also that Russia and China would be acting in concert???
That was implied but not definitely stated. The Russian heavy equipment suggests they might be planning a defensive war because they are concerned about the US encircling the homeland with military bases. Its been suggested that Russia will not fight unless Russia itself is attacked.
Thanks... Geo/politics thinking... Russia has 2500 mile open border with China, plus millions of Chinese living in Eastern Russia. Russia does not want to have the US totally withdraw from Asian mainland and Japan. Reason...Japan in months would be nuclear capable, China has near two billion people, few resources and little land. Russia has excess land and resources. Russia for 100 years has wanted all of Europe. This is not possible as long as the US sits in the West and China sits to their South. With this stalemate anyone starting a global war, regardless of their "equipment" would be foolhardy. Russia knows full well that if the US withdraws, goes home, they are finished.
China now has a declining population. According to Beijing's official numbers, China's work force has declined by 25 million workers about the combined work forces of California and Ohio since topping out in 2011. And they have shown no interest in conquest except for perhaps Tibet which they feel is strategically necessary. Siberia is not necessary for lebensraum but perhaps a place to be exploited for raw materials. If their pattern holds, they will buy what they want just like they exploit Africa and South America. Cheaper than sending in the army. AFAIK Russia has few military bases in the East but they are worried about NATO setting up bases right along their European border. And should the US succeed in taking over the Middle East, their southern border would be exposed. They had to intervene in Syria and have state they would stand by Iran if we attacked.
This is confusing. Russia and China are arming for war, much better than the US? War with whom?? If not a nuclear war, it is a long way from Russia and China to the US. One cannot drive tanks across the ocean? Or perhaps do the Chinese and Russians NOT TRUST EACH OTHER??? They are preparing for large modern land war. Where? Russia and China invade Middle East in concert? Today the Brits voted to get out of the EU. Perhaps Trump will now draw down on NATO???

Some Russian military equipment--the Sukhoi and their anti-aircraft systems--are reputed to be better than anything the US has. Even if that is so, they clearly don't have very many of them. Their military budget is a fraction of ours as is China's. Neither can initiate an aggressive war against the US although they must prepare for a defensive one. China has shown little interest in the Middle East except for protecting its natural gas imports from Iran. The only country that worries them militarily other than the US seems to be India. The British people have spoken re Brexit but that doesn't mean Johnson can be trusted to implement their will.
