The issue of immigration was suddenly all over the news this month. The interesting question here is: Why does the federal government find it so difficult to do anything? It would seem to be a pretty elementary thing, and a basic function of government, to secure the nation’s borders and monitor who comes in, who goes out. Why can’t we do that? You hear all sorts of reasons. Big Agriculture wants fruit pickers and hog gutters; Elite America wants domestic servants; Middle America wants gardeners (sorry “landscapers” — hard to keep up with job-title inflation); the Dems want future voters; the Catholic Church wants souls; and so on.

The real reason we find it so hard to do anything about immigration, or even to talk about it, or even to think straight about it, is that it has a large intersection with the race issue, about which Americans have a humongous collective neurosis. Those huge protests the other day weren’t just made up of illegal immigrants — you can’t tell me that. What they were was, demonstrations of racial solidarity. This is well-nigh unmentionable — for sure nobody in the MSM mentioned it — yet it was perfectly obvious from the crowds and their placards.

This is the wind from the south predicted in Amy Chua’s book World on Fire, the wind that blew Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales into office, the wind that may soon bring us a People’s Republic of Mexico. But no, that can’t be right. There is no such thing as race. Never has been, never will be. A couple more “diversity” workshops, and everything will be fine. No need for further action. Everything will be fine, everything will always be fine.

They don't frighten me and if our government had any spine, they would simply inforce the law or change it.

10 years in the Bay Area for me. They didn't scare me there. In fact, I had four of 'em deported. Two for trying to break into my apartment (never pick the lock on an armed man's house when he is home) and two for breaking into my car.

Those two arrests helped break up a *HUGE* goods-smuggling ring. Where were the goods going? South of the border.

Everyone in California knows what is going on - with the dotcom boom, nobody really cared. You'd get another five-figure bonus or another batch of stock the next week so you wouldn't miss a TV or a window. So long as things stayed in a predictable pattern, nobody cared.

Now everyone cares because the Genie has left the bottle. Even the *CHINESE* I know down there are ready to take up arms....and are seriously pissed off.

The street protests backfired in every single way imaginable. It has united people in a way nobody thought possible - they are becoming Americans again, at least for a short time.

People whose sole concern was abortion are now "single issue voters" over the border now.

This is like a miniature Pearl Harbor; the sleeping tiger has awakened and its not the "Nation of Aztlan"....these are going to be VERY interesting times going forward.

I see we do agree. I doubt, though, that the illegals are cohesive. It is our government that is at fault. The solution is simple but not easy for the whores and parasites in Washington, D.C. -- enforce the law or teach America that the law is a joke. They are teaching us to disrespect the law.

Well just do a search on 'la raza'.. 'le mecha' 'aztlan' ..heres a start..

This is the kind of thing that makes me feel more like a Cassandra than a mehitable, but I've been telling people for years now that the United States is either going to have to fight for or lose the Southwest in a few years. I thought it would take another generation but things are moving faster than I realized. Unlike stupid, self-loathing white people in America, the Mexicans think very highly of themselves (which I don't mind, by the way) and think they should own this real estate and run things themselves. And they won't be very nice to the white folks who happen to be around. Nor the black folks either. they don't like black people. Kind of puts the black "leadership" in a quandary. Who to side with? the dreaded white oppressor or the Mexicans who would be as happy to kill you as oppress you. Decisions, decisions. People had better figure out what side they're on as the Mexican-American war is coming.

The Mexicans had better bring help. Americans have done a pretty good job of arming themselves and I doubt they'll hesitate to protect their own and their property. It's only the government that's ambivilant.

I wish I were as optimistic as you Phaedrus. It's not so much that I doubt the American people (or a good portion of them anyway) - it's that I doubt OUR GOVERNMENT and I believe they work against our interests. For example, if American citizens started fighting back against the Mexicans, our govt would take the side of the Mexicans and start killing Americans or imprisoning/fining them. We are seeing this already with the Minutemen. And our alleged president, Bush, was down in Mexico yesterday firmly applying his lips all over the backside of Vincente Fox.

One hope I do have is that the veterans of this current Iraqi war when they do return home will at least have the benefit of having used arms and explosive and being able to stand up under fire and handle themselves under war conditions. That's a big advantage over the Mexicans whom I think currently restrict their fighting to internecine gang wars.

I don't think you're being deceptive, I think you're hung up on words and maybe outthinking yourself. Anyone can say lots of scarifying things. It's up to us to decide whether we should be scarified. And, frankly, "why should we talk about it at all" is not a relevant question. Sure we should talk about it but truth should be sought and spoken and actions should be clearly distinguished from words. Any monkey can type words.

Oh no, nothing so crude. We have a highly complex and reasonably accurate model developed by trained experts to determine credit-worthiness, and race is not a variable.
