Yeah, I've been wondering about jet propulsion in space and I frankly find it impossible to believe we send spacecraft billions of miles away to photograph Saturn or whatever. You can't even figure out why objects fall when dropped, and can't understand why there is day and night, nor why there are seasons, eclipses, or why the sun brings warmth to the planet. The OUTSIDE of a space craft is a vacuum, but the engine uses pressurized fuel and liquid oxygen. It is far from being a vacuum where the fuel combusts with the oxygen. This is elementary school stuff dude. Get yourself a 6th grade science book from the 70's and see what you've missed. As far as needing to "propel" itself for 238 thousand miles, it doesn't. A burn of the main engine is timed for a certain duration, then shut down. A fundamental law of motion is that an object will not accelerate without a force acting upon it. So once the desired velocity is reached, there is no further need for acceleration. The trajectory is plotted to utilize both earth and moon gravity so that the craft reaches moon orbit, with perhaps another engine burn to put it into final orbit. Go to school. HOW did the alleged NASA "space ships" combust and fire rockets -- PLUS have enough fuel aboard that space-craft -- to not only launch from the Moon, but travel ANOTHER supposed 238,000 miles BACK to Earth?? As previously answered, it doesn't burn fuel the entire way. You're thinking in terms of an airplane that needs to expend energy to pass through the air, as the air produces friction in the way of drag. An object traveling through a vacuum only needs to expend energy to accelerate, either positive acceleration or negative (as in deceleration). (Have you noted how tiny those Apollo "space ships" were?? According to your calculations (OR ANYONE ELSE -- what was the fuel capacity of these Apollo vessels? And again -- sustained combustion in a vacuum is IMPOSSIBLE.) Another repetition of the same invalid claims. It is neither sustained nor do rocket engines not use fuel or oxygen, they use both. Myself I wrote software to take actual pixel information from a weather satellite, and using a Lambert Conformal map projection algorithm to plot the necessary geodetic coordinates, plotted the pixel data from the satellite into the pixel location for that specific coordinate. It created an actual image of a 3 dimensional visual snapshot of the earth plotted onto a 2 dimensional surface (the picture recorded by the satellite), then plotted onto a 2 dimensional map of the US, such as what you see on TV weather or road maps. So dude, you're messing with the wrong guy. If I were some stoned out kid in Jr. High, maybe you could convince me. But I'm not. On your map you'd have to keep steering to the left to follow the coastline of Antarctica if you're heading east. It real life you have to steer to the right. Did you know you can actually take a cruise ship to Antarctica? Given the Azimuthal Equidistant Projection Map is THE one universally accepted map of all navigation, flight, and mapping... Look at the map again. One can why exactly why routes from say Santiago Chlie to Auckland, NZ would stop near LAX. It's almost directly on the straight route to Auckland according to the AEP Map. You'll also find stops on the globe often make NO sense -- UNTIL you see the AEP Map. Have you always believed in this nonsense? On the real planet earth you can fly over the north pole and heading directly south towards the south pole and flying directly over it, you'd be heading back to the north pole again heading north.
