Trump Haters Demand POTUS Stop Playing 'Macho Man,' Village People Shut Them Down

Music Legend Village People Hand Trump Haters Major Defeat

Volume 90%

YMCA, meet MAGA.

I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked. We live in a hyper-politicized America where Ravelry, a knitting social media website, banned support for President Donald Trump or his administration in June. Alas, my herringbone-stitched Trump-Pence 2020 lawn sign will sadly go unrecognized.

However, I would have thought the Village People would be, well, apolitical at this point. It’s not just that “YMCA,” “Macho Man” and “In the Navy” have passed into the common cultural lexicon at this point. It’s that the group itself stopped being culturally relevant beyond those songs during the Carter administration. For one day every year — Halloween — the group becomes relevant again.

Aside from that one day when you and your friends dress as the military guy and the biker guy and the construction guy (although probably not the Native American anymore), nobody really thinks about the Village People or what their take on Donald Trump is. That changed very briefly over the past few weeks because the president has (again) played some of their songs at his rallies.

The president used “Macho Man” during his recent trip to India, which led to the group being “inundated” with angry fans demanding they speak out.

So, they did — although likely not in a way most of the people who reached out expected them to.

“We have received numerous requests demanding that we prevent or ban President Donald Trump’s use of our songs, particularly ‘Y.M.C.A.’ and ‘Macho Man,'” the group said in a Feb. 24 Facebook post.

“Since our music is not being used for a specific endorsement, the President’s use is ‘perfect[ly]’ legal.

“He has remained respectful in his use of our songs and has not crossed the line; if he or any other candidate were to use any of our songs in a manner that would suggest our endorsement, or in a promotional advertisement, that would cross the line,” they added.

“Like millions of Village People fans worldwide, the President and his supporters have shown a genuine like for our music.

“Our music is all-inclusive and certainly everyone is entitled to do the YMCA dance, regardless of their political affiliation. Having said that, we certainly don’t endorse his use as we’d prefer our music be kept out of politics.”

www.facebook.com/RealVill...le/posts/1386463228220950

The Hill reported that a spokesperson from the group said the campaign’s use of the music “has nothing to do with gay support of the group.”

“The Village People’s music has been a cultural influence tied to the LGBTQ community, a group that some of Trump’s policies have targeted,” The Hill noted.

According to Fox News, “Macho Man” played before Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the stage for a rally in Gujarat.

As you can see from a tweet from the official account of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, it was indeed a large rally:

Myself and another big guy were in a disco in Illinois with a gorgeous blond. She was out on the dance floor. When the dance was over she came back to our table. This little dweeb followed her back.

He starts to hit on her and the other big guys says, "Disco duck, quack, quack. Take a walk." He ignores him and hits on the blond again.

Then I said, "Disco duck, quack, quack. Take a walk."

He looked at me and then the other big guy and says, "Oh, ok." And he stumbles away. ROTFLOL

When a music artist releases music for sale/licensing into the marketplace, they forfeit any usage rights of it, and cannot be selective of which members of the public can make use of it. That would be like a hat seller setting rules on which of his customers are allowed to wear his hats. Everyone's money is equally good.

So long as license fees are paid by Trump for the music use, the artists cannot legally complain.

The summary provided by the Village People is correct. If Trump were to claim the VP endorsed him, THEN they VP could lodge a complaint.

Correct. I've had a bunch of people calling me today wanting to know what to do. I told them to do nothing, it's already too late.

Markets tend to go down a lot faster than they go up (except oil), buy what you think is the bottom, and sell high, don't get greedy.

Hell, I got a check in the mail a week ago along with a letter telling me not to file my 2019 taxes (which I did a month ago). It quadrupled my AGI for 2019.

I'm in serious trouble with the IRS, Ind dept of revenue, obamaCare, etc.

I need a good tax acct or a good lawyer at this point. Nobody's answering their phones right now.

My take from the markets today is buy contracts in WTI crude oil. It's down to about $30/bbl, off $10 ~ -25%. I don't think you can lose from that. YMMV, I'm not a pro money-changer.

(Edit) That Schedule K-1 Form 1041 rocked my world, not to mention TurboTax not getting my 1095A info this year. My taxes are so effed up there's no way I can amend myself, not to mention that the Form 1041 is incomplete.

Well, the check's a pleasant surprise. Now to locate a competent CPA to deal with the IRS details.

Tomorrow buy some crude contracts and quadruple your $$$ again.

I didn't quadruple my net worth, just my AGI for 2019. Hell, I lost $50k+ in the markets today, but I didn't sell.

Trump's already stepped in and got WTI moving up. No friggin' way were they gonna let us peons benefit from cheap energy. Sheesh, even Au and Ag didn't do for sh!+ today.

I'm having a riot, this is like the old Market Wrap-Up days in 2008-9 when arete and the fellas were here. I'm having fun trolling the newbie doom & gloomers at ZH.

I was at least smart enough (didn't have the stomach) to look at my account today. Late night Fox blurb says the Dow is back up 440 and change, so there's that for a better night's rest.

Yep, West Texas Intermediate. Just oil on CNBC, Brent is Brent North Sea Crude oil. WTI & Brent are kind of benchmarks.

if my wife recoups in oil what she's lost on Carnival Cruise Line.

I'd be careful. Trading futures, options, derivatives, etc. can be very risky and difficult.

To be honest, I don't remember exactly what the best way to place a bet on oil going up would be. I've never had good luck doing that and have ceased trying years ago after getting burned a few times.

My only rationale for thinking oil is going up is that cheap energy would be good for common folks and bad for the oil companies. I just don't think that would be allowed to stand. Oil seems to be up about 10% already today.

The Dow opened up about a thousand and seems to be fading. My guess is that stocks will probably fade into the close about unchanged or slightly up and then take a real beating again tomorrow. Nothing has changed since yesterday to warrant stocks turning on a dime.

Be careful, this is gambling and the house always wins...

Thanks for the wise counsel. My wife only dabbles in the market -- a few thousand dollars here and there. In other words, she follows the old adage to not invest what she can't afford to lose.

I know that decisions are made for the benefit of the decision makers, and that folks other than you and I control the markets to their own advantage. Years ago I invested heavily in PMs, but being an unsavvy market timer, I've profited less from that than if I had just thrown it all into an S&P 500 mutual fund. Finally sold a good bit of PMs a few months ago just in time to have it in the latest market crash.

But there's food on the table, and the kids are healthy. So life is good. (Well, life would be good if my low-life neighbors would shut their stupid dogs up.)

Good analogy....

It seems the PTB have deputized The Mob in "selecting" or enforcing the rules of engagement on hat-wearing, clothing, and musical use.
