'Truckers Don't Deal in Fear': Trucking Association Pres. Promises Stores Will Stay Stocked During Coronavirus Crisis

Trucking Association President Makes Bold Promise

Volume 90%

By Johnathan Jones

Published March 18, 2020 at 10:55am

America’s trucking industry wants people know that despite fear surrounding the coronavirus epidemic, they can count on grocery store shelves being stocked and other goods being delivered.

The American Trucking Association issued a statement Wednesday promising that supply chains would remain intact, no matter the issue facing the country.

“The coronavirus pandemic invokes fear. That’s understandable. We’re confronted with a novel virus that represents a serious threat to public health,” ATA president and CEO Chris Spear said.

“We’re also faced with uncertainty. Uncertainty gives rise to misinformation, and it’s in these environments that rumors run rampant. Hysteria, more so than the underlying challenge, is often what fuels public fear,” he continued.

“It reminds me of 9/11. In the immediate wake of that horrific attack on our country, the things we didn’t know outweighed the things we did. Those “unknowns” gave room to falsehoods, and rumors spread — like an epidemic,” Spear added.

Spear then urged Americans to unite against a common enemy in the coronavirus, and promised that the country’s logistics workforce is up to any challenge presented to them.

“There is plenty of food, water, medicine, fuel and, yes, toilet paper, in our supply chain. The empty shelves temporarily seen are simply the result of surge demand as Americans rush to stock up. They’ve been quickly restocked as carriers and retailers adjust to the whims of the market,” he wrote.

“Truckers don’t deal in fear. They have a job to get done. They get up, hop in the cab, and take to the road. Truckers always deliver, even when there’s a natural disaster or expanding crisis,” Spear continued. “Like those crises of past, this coronavirus pandemic too shall pass. After a period of disruption to our familiar routines, life will return to normal.”

Spear concluded, “I don’t anticipate this road will be easy, but I have no doubt we will surpass it. Let facts, not rumors, guide the way. Pull together, rather than against one another. Put politics aside in the interest of our common good. Above all, keep calm — and keep on trucking.”

The ATA’s statement comes after reports of food and toiletries shortages nationwide, as people rush to stock up on goods in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

President Donald Trump urged people this week to “relax” and stop hoarding supplies.

“You don’t have to buy so much, take it easy,” he said Tuesday. “Relax, we’re doing great. It all will pass.”

twitter.com/TinaAguayotv/status/1239305993726484481

Trump has been in constant communication with many of the country’s largest retailers, which have pledged to stay open throughout the public health crisis.

“Our supply chains in America are the most powerful in the world, and they’re all working very hard,” he said.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported in 2019 that the number of truckers is at an all-time high.

More than 3.5 million people currently work as truck drivers, according to the bureau.

The U.S. Census Bureau said at the time, “Between 2012 and 2016, the number of trucking businesses grew 15.9%, outpacing total growth across all industries (8.0 percent).”

'Truckers Don't Deal in Fear':

Yeah, they do. I'm pretty close to an owner/operator (OOIDA member). I was talking to him about a week ago about to what to be ready for while his rig was in the shop being overhauled. "I don't wanna hear about shit like that, shut up!"

OK, the story was different this morning when he called in a panic, regretting all the houses, vehicles and other shit he has bought. I'm not too sympathetic to folks that don't want my advice until they've destroyed themselves.

I don't think so, NN. I had to go out today to take care of something very important, no, it didn't have anything to do with TP or food.

It was about keeping my word to a good and long-term friend that I haven't been able to see near enough over the years.

I had to go to a low-intensity business to take care of what I had to do (it was pretty cool, never done anything like it in my travels. Raised some hackels).

On the way to my truck in the parking lot of this strip mall, there was a black couple fighting. All I heard was, "Fuck you, bitch! After here I'm takin' you to the hospital!"

I really don't want to talk about what I saw and heard today until I have some more time to process it.

Am I panicked, no. You'd have to be human for that.

When the cash is rolling in you tend to spend it. You buy all the things you have always wanted.

If you fail to plan for things like the overhaul you know will be coming when you get over 150,000 miles on that truck you will find yourself in deep doo-doo. ;

Some should learn frugality like old Kraus on the State Highways. When we were in a restaurant at the end of the meal he would say, "Just leave a quarter for a tip. That's enough." :-/

Sheeple gotta sheep, I guess.

You buy all the things you have always wanted.

I never did, I was always worried too much about everyone else. About a month ago, I lifted up my head and decided to do something for myself. It had to do with a car I wanted in Denver. Arranged a cheap flight from FWA to DEN, dealer sold it just after I made all the arrangements. Think I mentioned to Loddy in a post. Effin' huge disappointment.

I swear to Odin, I'll never become self-aware enough again to even think about doing something for myself.

I'm glad you were able to return safely.

Always do. Sometimes it involves being taped to a backboard, ambulance ride and hospital stay, a MediVac flight home or a couple nights in jail, but yeah, I always get home.

I'm still a little pissed about my doo-gooder friend bailing me out last time. I was kind of having fun learning about how the other half lives, a little sociological experiment, if you will. I didn't call him, his wanna-be cop step-daughter checks the arrest records on the net and called him. They'd have had to let me loose soon anyway, hell this shit was bogus.

Shoot, anyway, I was the "old man" and the scared kids didn't mess with me and had some strange respect for me. One of the kids asked me what I did.

"I didn't do nuthin'. Who the fuck do you think you are to talk to me?"

I guess that I was practicing "social distancing" before it was fashionable. Calmed down the scuttlebutt for awhile, but if they'd get too loud telling of their amazing exploits, all I had to do was say shut the hell up, and they would.

I'm not a bad fella, just obstinate, I suppose that grates on a lot of people. Eff it, I don't care. I'm a lot like smoked kipper snacks, you either love them or hate them, no in-between.

There might be a few folks here that know I'm not a bad guy, I'm not.

Pin, sorry for some of the language, I'll try to tone it down.

I'm real, if not strange. I try not to offend anybody's "delicate sensibilities" especially now that everybody has so many of them. I try to limit my language online, and to a lesser amount in person (it's not a matter of record then).

Sometimes I guess it helps get the point across. I know it's course and unrefined, but I get frustrated sometimes. Sorry.

I literally didn't even notice it until I saw your apology, and had to scroll back to see what the hell you were talking about.

Sometimes I guess it helps get the point across. I know it's course and unrefined, but I get frustrated sometimes. Sorry.

I remember once watching the Blair Witch Project with some friends who were accustomed to my never resorting to using language, and we were at the part in the movie where this woman was letting loose a screaming monologue of obscenities at her friends out of combo of fear and frustration, and it went on absurdly long to the point of being over the top. About then our very polite female host asked if any of us wanted anything to drink, and I very politely responded in the affirmative in a long sentence similarly chock full of obscenities, ensuring of course, that my appreciation was very much noticable.

My friends were rolling on the floor.

But when I do (unless it's with Dakkie), I mean it.Don't try to be so serious all the time NN, have some fun. There's only one person here that I don't like, but I think they're just lonely and angry. They do make a good point sometimes.

I do not think the world will miss much of what China exports, unless you like to buy junk that falls apart like what the Japs made after the end of WW II.

I needed a new leather belt too. The one I bought was stamped "Made in China". I guess we cannot even make those here any longer. :-/

I have been watching some old re-runs on video of 12 O'clock High the time when the B-17s were bombing targets in Germany and France.

I was reading another story about a Lutheran Pastor who decided Germany was indeed a tyranny. I think it was Martin Niemoller.

And I just discovered Dietrich Bonhoeffer who was an anti-Nazi dissident. ;)

Ya know, I was thinking today that I'd like people online to know me better, I've hung out a little bit at ZeroHedge (ZH), missin' the old "Market WrapUp" gang. ZH moves way the hell too fast now, not for this old timer.

Some folks don't understand me here, I fear, unless they're really old- timers from the git (hoosier hickistan for gate, beginning).

So I thought movie or TeeVee references. OK, Borg from Star Trek FNG (bear in mind that I haven't been to a movie since "Alien" (1979?).

Well, I'm about as far away from a Borg that you could get. I'll never be part of a collective. Communism, socialism, etc. I've been ruthless & creul when the job demanded it.

Then it hit me. I was Godfrey from the movie "My Man Godfrey" circa 1932. I loved William Powell in the "Thin Man" movies. That was pretty close, not inaccurate, but Godfrey was way too self aware, maybe...

If'n y'all want the best fictional (real) depiction of me is, it's Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) in the movie "Blade Runner".

He was a creation of a company (circumstance) and didn't want to die. I don't either. I know it's just a movie, but I can't explain my life. How would I?

Maybe in some songs, like X-15 posted for me about Dale Jr.
