CNN.com PHILLIPS: Now to the security part of Social Security. Government auditors have found thousands of cases of federal workers using bogus or borrowed Social Security numbers, thereby blurring their true identities. And we're not talking bureaucrats here. These are Defense Department workers, civilian and military. CNN's Lisa Sylvester has that story. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) LISA SYLVESTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The audit by the Social Security Administration's inspector general found more than 6,400 Department of Defense employees between 1997 and 2002 were working with bogus Social Security number. Nearly a third of those were using a deceased person's Social Security number or the Social Security number of a child. DAN STEIN, FEDERATION FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM: If one government agency is hiring someone whose identity is not really known, whose paying on a Social Security number that was never issued or that belonged to someone else, it really represents a potential security threat. SYLVESTER: The Social Security Administration matched W-2 forms against the information in its database. Sixty-four percent of those with invalid Social Security numbers were either active duty or reserve status. Thirty-six percent were civilian DOD employees. According to the report, while the Social Security Administration offers all employers a verification service to screen potential employees, the inspector general could not find evidence that the Air Force or Coast Guard were verifying their employees' names and Social Security numbers. MICHAEL O'HANLON, BROOKINGS INSTITUTION: It uncovers a sloppy practice that has no justification, that's hard to really understand why it would be allowed to occur and that must be immediately fixed. SYLVESTER: A Pentagon spokesperson said the DOD inspector general is in the process of reviewing the report and will take appropriate action as required. The Coast Guard went even further, saying, "The Coast Guard investigates every employee, both military and civilian, at hiring, using a much more rigorous standard than a simple Social Security number verification." But questions have also been raised over the lack of screening of private DOD contractor employees. Illegal aliens have been arrested working in restricted areas of the Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. (on camera) Congressman John Hostettler, chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security, sent the Department of Defense a letter, saying, "It is very disturbing to me that the DOD employs persons with unknown or unconfirmed identities who may take up positions with access to dangerous weapons or access to sensitive information." He is now demanding that the Pentagon provide proof that it is screening Social Security numbers. Lisa Sylvester, CNN, Washington. (END VIDEOTAPE)

Precisely. I believe I got this point across to my brother today--finally. We got into a 'discussion' this afternoon when I brought up that our senator craig had stated that lou dobbs had no way of knowing there are 20 million illegals or whether there are 12 million--and dobbs said EXACTLY. The senator made his point--NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY, OTHER THAN IT'S A HELL OF A LOT. Told him that while I liked Reagan, he did give amensty back in something like '86 and that it was to never happen again.......and yet we have more illegals than ever. Brother just thinks nothing can be done....and I told him they haven't tried anything! When cities, counties, and states can round them up and the feds tell them to release them! Brothers' eyes got a bit bigger. Without trying it, we have no idea how successful it would be---especially if we had a fence up and had our own military checking the border instead of getting their asses shot off over in some country that never did anything to us--quite the contrary, we did a hell of a lot to them. Told brother a hell of a lot of good it does for him, as an employer, to have to check every new employee...when the damned government never does any checking to see that he or anyone else is complying! He had to agree with that, too.
Ya know, robin.......when something like this happens in the private sector, there are all sorts of fines and penalties an private employer is subject to when the social security number has a problem. If a private employer reports to the feds that it is indeed the number on the card, then fedgub is required to do some investigating in order to make numbers match with records. Who the hell knows what they do when it is public sector that they deal with! Seemingly, nothing.

If a private employer reports to the feds that it is indeed the number on the card, then fedgub is required to do some investigating in order to make numbers match with records. Who the hell knows what they do when it is public sector that they deal with! Seemingly, nothing. 60 Minutes and other investigative programs have shown how easy it is to obtain a fake birth certificate, SSN & Drivers License. You can buy anything on a street corner in L.A. to appear legal. So, these are just the ones they caught.

When I temped--not worked for, temped for--in a bank, I used to punch in variations of my SSN to see which had been issued and I could use in the future. I found a couple, too, account holders at the bank. I even got the CEO's SSN, and he was head of the Republican Party of Minnesota! Now that I'm a pawnbroker, I have hundreds of valid SSNs in storage in my basement, thanks to states like IA and SD formerly using the SSN as the driver's license #.

The illegals have an enormous support base including many latinos who work in all govt departments. Catholic charities are always there to help too. The homeless charities and job programs meant for Americans are filled with illegals. The La Raza thing comes into play in everyday life too. Victor Davis Hanson, who wrote "Mexifornia", a 5 generation Californian, in a television interview, once described a scene where a local Fresno cop let an illegal go after she had driven off the road and run over and destroyed several grapevines. He estimated the loss at $20,000. The cop was latino, he never even took her name, telling Hanson that she hadn't any money to pay anyway. The San Diego police reported they have been told not to arrest illegals for minor incidents because the paperwork is not worth it.

I have seen that 'infamous' picture of the Mexican flag flying ABOVE an upside-down flag all over the place on the internet, but I don't believe I have seen it here at 4um. Can someone post it here, please? People need to see this.

on March 29 the inspector general of the Social Security Administration published an audit report revealing that Defense, plus the Coast Guard (which is a component of the Department of Homeland Security), filed nearly 6,400 W-2 forms between 1997-2002 that could not be matched to known taxpayers and thus had to be dumped into what SSA calls the Earnings Suspense File (ESF).
