Title: Coronavirus Global 300,000 Infections, 13,000 Deaths – Is This Really a Lot? (No, It Isn’t)

Basically, there is a maximum of six weeks left wherein this virus is going to be able to spread with any efficiency, as after it starts to warm up in mid-May, the lipid wall of the virus will start to melt in the environment.

So how is 300,000 infections and 13,000 deaths a big deal?

This is all just a boomer hoax, because these people are afraid of the flu.

New York Post:

Coronavirus cases rocketed to more than 300,000 Saturday, with deaths rising to nearly 13,000 as leaders around the world urged their citizens to stay home to slow the spread of the pandemic.

The spike comes the same day that Italy’s death toll surged by 793 in a single 24-hour period, two days after the country had surpassed China in coronavirus deaths.

This wasn’t even good for the boomers who hoaxed it.

All it did was crash the economy, now they’re all whining about it.

I’m whining about it too, because this is not fair.

We should have closed the border with China, then done nothing.

This is all a gigantic HOAX.

I do not care that 13,000 people died, almost all of them in foreign countries, and all of them on the cusp of death already anyway.

I want my time and money back, I want back my bitcoin value, I want back the last weeks I’ve spent writing about this stupid hoax virus when I could have been writing about Star Trek: Picard or something else that interests me.

You are literally more likely to get attacked by an alligator than you are to die from Coronavirus.

I hope the boomers who hoaxed this do get attacked by alligators.

True that this one might be different from ordinary flu, but the Chinese seem to have Covid under control, i.e., they didn't need sunshine and high humidity in order to do it.

I don't think the data supports the notion that the virus will start to run out of steam with warmer weather.

I don't think it's so much of a temperature thing, but rather a function of more sunlight (increased UV exposure). UV kills pathogens, hence the use of UV germicidal lamps (which can be very dangerous if used improperly, blindness being one nasty side effect. Ask a welder about that).

Higher temps without the normal (usual) increase in UV may well increase the incubation of the virus. Of course with the lack of UV, comes the resultant decrease of Vitamin D production in humans, exacerbating the situation (especially oldsters inside).

Here in NE IN, we don't usually get much sun in the winter, but when we do, it's not exactly like I'm out in the sun with my beer gut hanging out gulping up that VitD. It's usually bitter cold on sunny winter days.

I'd about bet you dollars for donuts, that folks with access to a tanning bed around here, fare a lot better than those of us that don't.

Down this way, it's basically spring time all year round. Here we have a major coastal city at sea level of some 3 million people or more and they have 10x the number of cases as we do in the capital city in the mountains (8500 feet altitude). If indeed warmer weather hampers this virus, I would expect the growth rate of infection to be different between the 2 cities. I'm monitoring.

We're on pretty strict lockdown now. Curfew from 7 PM - 5 AM, and they are looking to essentially put everyone in the country on house arrest excepting 18-55 year olds to make food runs. Haven't gone that far yet, but the noose is tightening.

Higher temps without the normal (usual) increase in UV may well increase the incubation of the virus. Of course with the lack of UV, comes the resultant decrease of Vitamin D production in humans, exacerbating the situation (especially oldsters inside).

This time of year is usually the rainy season, but the past week or so the weather has been great. Lots of sun. Need to cut the grass again.

Yes, the sun is low on the horizon there too which filters out more UV light. Down here it goes right overhead, especially during the equinox which we just had. And straight overhead at this altitude makes for a strong UV combo.

I'd about bet you dollars for donuts, that folks with access to a tanning bed around here, fare a lot better than those of us that don't.

For Vit D, it should, but all things in moderation, as they say. The more tan, the less able to synthesize Vit D in the sun.

Right. I think the tanning beds are in the UV-B spectrum, but don't know the efficacy of them against pathogens directly.

The UV-C germicidal bulbs, and welding arcs are the really bad ones. I burned myself pretty badly with a little, 4 Watt, 6 inch UV-C florescent bulb after only a maybe 30 minute exposure. Thank Odin I had my UV glasses on. The visible light is a dull purple. Pretty, pretty.

I'm seeing a lot of ads on ZH and other sites hawking portable UV germicidal lamps like the one that hurt me. Some folks might get really hurt if they're not aware. Some of the systems that I built years ago in HVAC systems were pretty high-power and need all kinds of lock-outs and warnings.

FWIW, the tubes weren't glass, but rather quartz. I guess run-of-the- mill glass is pretty good at blocking UV-C. You weren't supposed to touch the tubes, not because they got so hot and would shatter like a halogen car headlight bulb, I guess the residual skin oil would reduce the efficiency of the output.

It's just a theory, but it's based on me asking an old-timey MD as a young shaver, "Why don't we get sick in the summer." He told me the summer sun kills the "bugs."

The rest comes from the history of nurses taking patients out of the hospital tents during the Civil War, or maybe during WWI, don't remember which anymore.

More deaths in Italy than in China. Perhaps Italy is practicing mass extermination as the doctors will not treat anyone over 60.

My gal-pal had to come over to pick up her new vacuum sweeper she had shipped to my house (needed it put together), so while she was here I had her drive me to the store to get a few things for me and her.

Wasn't too many folks at the store, but a lot were coming in as we were leaving (probably just getting off work).

Frequently asked questions related to ‘Stay at Home’ order from Governor Holcomb

Posted: Mar 23, 2020 / 12:09 PM EDT / Updated: Mar 23, 2020 / 01:22 PM EDT INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb delivered a statewide address Monday to order that Hoosiers remain in their homes except when they are at work or for permitted activities, such as taking care of others, obtaining necessary supplies, and for health and safety. Below are frequently asked questions and their answers.

When does the order take effect?

The Stay-At-Home Order takes effect Tuesday, March 24 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

When does the order end?

The order ends on Monday, April 6, at 11:59 p.m. ET, but could be extended if the outbreak warrants it.

Where does the order apply?

The Stay-At-Home Order applies to the entire state of Indiana. Unless you work for an essential business or are doing an essential activity, you must stay home.

Is this mandatory or a recommendation?

This order is mandatory. For the safety of all Hoosiers, people must stay home and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

How will this order be enforced?

Staying home is critical to reducing the spread of COVID-19 in your community. Adhering to the order will save lives, and it is the responsibility of every Hoosier to do their part. However, if the order is not followed, the Indiana State Police will work with local law enforcement to enforce this order. The Indiana State Department of Health and the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission will enforce the restaurant and bar restrictions.

Will the Indiana National Guard enforce this order?

No. The Indiana National Guard is aiding in planning, preparation and logistics with other state agencies. For example, the Indiana National Guard assists in distributing hospital supplies the state receives.

What is an essential business?

Essential businesses and services include but are not limited to grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, doctor’s offices, health care facilities, garbage pickup, public transit, and public service hotlines such as SNAP and HIP 2.0.

A list can be found in the Governor’s executive order at in.gov/coronavirus.

What is an essential activity?

Essential activities include but are not limited to activities for health and safety, necessary supplies and services, outdoor activity, certain types of essential work, and to take care of others.

A list can be found in the Governor’s executive order at in.gov/coronavirus.

Yes, restaurants and bars can continue to provide takeout and delivery, but should be closed to dine-in patrons.

Can I get my groceries delivered? Can I still get my online orders delivered?

Yes, you can still receive packages, get groceries delivered, and get meals delivered.

How can I get medical care?

If you develop symptoms such as fever, cough and/or difficulty breathing, and have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or have recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19, stay home and call your healthcare provider.

If you suspected you have COVID-19, please call the healthcare provider in advance so that proper precautions can be taken to limit further transmission. Older patients and individuals who have severe underlying medical conditions or are immunocompromised should contact their healthcare provider early, even if their illness is mild.

If you have severe symptoms, such as persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, or bluish lips or face, contact your healthcare provider or emergency room and seek care immediately, but please call in advance if possible. Your doctor will determine if you have signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and whether you should be tested.

Nonessential medical care such as eye exams and teeth-cleaning should be postponed. When possible, health care visits should be done remotely. Contact your health care provider to see what telehealth services they provide.

What is the guidance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

State-operated developmental centers, intermediate care facilities for individuals with developmental disabilities and community integrated living arrangements will continue to provide care. All in-home direct care staff are considered essential staff and should continue to support individuals in the home setting.

If you have specific questions about your support and services, reach out to your provider or individual service coordination agency.

What if I still have to go to work?

You should stay home unless your work is an essential function such as a health care provider, grocery store clerk or first responder. If you have been designated essential by your employer, you should continue to go to work and practice social distancing.

A list of essential businesses can be found in the Governor’s executive order at in.gov/coronavirus.

What if I think my business should be closed, but they’re still asking me to report to work?

Essential businesses will remain open during the stay-at-home order to provide services that are vital to the lives of Hoosiers. If you believe your business is nonessential but still are being asked to show up to work, you may discuss it with your employer.

A certain service is essential for me, but the governor didn’t include it. What do I do?

The stay-at-home order was issued to protect the health, safety and well-being of Hoosiers. Although some businesses such as fitness centers and salons will be closed, essential services will always be available. For a list of essential businesses that will continue to operate during the order, visit in.gov/coronavirus.
