The Trump administration, in the face of strong opposition from Canada, has abandoned its plans to station U.S. troops near the Canadian border. "We have heard this is not something they're continuing to pursue, but we will of course continue to engage with the American administration as new situations come up and as things develop," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told an Ottawa new conference outside the Rideau Cottage, where he is in self-isolation. The Prime Minister has been diplomatic in his language, conscious of not offending President Trump. Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland was blunt last week, saying, "We have made that opposition very very clear to our American counterparts and we will continue to do so." The U.S. and Canada have the world's longest undefended land border, stretching from Point Roberts in Washington to Campobello Island in New Brunswick. The border continues in the north, crossed by residents who walk to a bar in Hyder, Alaska, and the 100,000-plus animals of the Porcupine Caribou herd whose migration route crosses two Canadian national parks and America's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The White House had discussed stationing troops 30 kilometers, roughly 18 miles, from the border to help the Department of Homeland Security apprehend those illegally crossing the border. The Canadian border is 22 miles north of Bellingham. The border is currently closed to all non-essential travel, including cruise ships (until June), tourism and recreation. Canada is asking all persons entering from other countries to self-isolate themselves for two weeks. Trudeau did so after his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, returned from London with symptons of the virus. She has apparently recovered. Canada has, as of Tuesday night, 9,104 cases of the COVID-19 virus, with 1,013 of those cases in British Columbia. A vast majority, 824 cases, are in grater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. The city includes some of the most densely populated neighborhoods in North America. B.C. has experienced 43 deaths. The first calls to close the border came from north of the 49th Parallel, as B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix grew alarmed at the pandemic outbreak and early deaths in King and Snohomish Counties. Grim warnings are coming from both sides of the border. On Tuesday, Dix and B.C. health officer Bonnie Henry warned in a statement: "We are at a critical juncture in our province's COVID-19 response. Every British Columbian has a part to play to flatten the curve." Poster Comment: I wonder how this will affect all those tow truck drivers on heavy rescue? Lucky I never needed them when I was driving, but I saw a few instances when they were needed. ;) Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
