The 2020 U.S. Presidential race is in full boil, with odds shifting on a daily basis. Even though political betting is not offered at any legal or regulated sportsbook in the United States, the European counterparts to US sportsbooks have robust betting markets. While many factors go into those odds — including if big bets have come in — they are also a good indicator of where things stand. Bookies.com handicapper Dan Kilbridge takes a look at today's state of the race. Don't forget to bookmark this page so you can check back weekday mornings during the campaign!

Up Next: Ohio Primary

We’ll be the first to admit that nobody really knows what’s next these days. The Ohio primary is on deck with an April 28 mail-in voting deadline, but that game is over from a betting perspective. Biden will be the Democratic nominee and is listed as a -2000 favorite. Clinton is next at +1000 and any top secret plans to run have been incredibly well-guarded should they exist.

The Democratic National Convention has been postponed until August and may be a virtual affair due to coronavirus. But we know one thing – political odds are one of the few betting diversions with sports gambling (other than futures markets) largely on the shelf for the foreseeable future.

Today's Takeaways

Biden Bandwagon

Biden added three key endorsements this week in what seems like a carefully-orchestrated timeline to convey unity in the Democratic party. Bernie Sanders gave Biden the nod Monday and former President Barack Obama made the biggest impact with a Tuesday address. Former presidential candidate and current Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren joined the party Wednesday roughly six weeks after she suspended her campaign.

In this moment of crisis, it’s more important than ever that the next president restores Americans’ faith in good, effective government—and I’ve seen Joe Biden help our nation rebuild. Today, I’m proud to endorse

The rapid-fire support created some buzz but has not yet impacted presidential election odds. Trump is still the favorite at -125 and Biden the underdog at +125. If nothing else, it should be beneficial for Biden to have others spreading his message. He can’t compete with Trump for airtime these days, with POTUS’ daily task force briefings regularly approaching two hours. He can’t even leave his basement studio on a regular basis due to social distancing guidelines.

Biden is in the rare spot of an underdog needing to play defense for now. Eventually he’ll have to ramp up the message and go hard at Trump. But Americans are paying more attention to infectious disease models than political polls right now. Bettors should assume we’ll see a much different approach from Biden later this summer. Whether more visibility helps or hurts his odds remains to be seen.

Party Odds

In terms of political party betting odds, the Republicans are favored to win the general election at -125. The Democrats are +100. So Biden’s odds of +125 are slightly worse than his own party’s. The discrepancy leaves some wiggle room for a big curveball from Cuomo or others.

Trump’s odds still seem strongly related to the stock market. He was at his lowest around the time the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped below 19,000 in late March. Now it’s back above 23,000 and some Americans received their $1,200 stimulus checks Wednesday.

GET RID OF BALLOT HARVESTING, IT IS RAMPANT WITH FRAUD. THE USA MUST HAVE VOTER I.D., THE ONLY WAY TO GET AN HONEST COUNT!

Trump is also getting the base fired up for a potential push on mail-in voting, with many concerned coronavirus could impact the general election in November. He has not provided any facts to back up the argument that absentee voting is rampant with fraud - in fact there is evidence to the contrary - but that’s never stopped him before. This is where the Biden team could run into trouble. Democrats learned the hard way in 2016 that traditional red flags like unproven claims and all-caps Twitter rants only endear Trump to his supporters. It might take an untraditional approach from Biden to pull off the upset.
