Writing from St. Augustine, northern Florida, Friday, 3 January 2020

Dear

Happy New Year - I have changed my location briefly to the United States, where I am working in more congenial surroundings to complete two projects fast: I am bringing Himmler to completion, revising the final text and pictures, while with my left hand, so to speak, I am doing much the same with a 200-page book my late father wrote and published in 1946, Royal Navalese - a delightful glossary of British naval slang and language, illustrated by my Mother – as illustrator was her profession.

My father J J C Irving, a Royal Navy commander, was active in both World Wars, so I only really knew him when he returned in 1945; he wrote movingly about those and other episodes, and I recognise now many of the phrases, which my mother had picked up and polished, and they became part of our family language over the years while he was away at the wars.

She was superstitious too; she told us that punching a hole through the bottom of the egg-shell when we had a (rare) boiled egg at breakfast was the way to save a sailor from drowning, and so we four children dutifully punched away. After he came home, undrowned despite HMS Edinburgh “going down” beneath him in 1942, he told me, with the merest soupçon of a sneer, that British Justice “is the best that money can buy,” and I believed that too. In peacetime he stayed in navy uniform, HMS Discovery, and on Admiralty charts there is a windswept bay in the Antarctic named after him.

The Himmler book will eventually be out as well, and I won't fear to point my finger at issues where the Government would prefer that people did not: I have developed my own long term theories about unimportant matters, like why so many top SS generals including Himmler himself apparently chose suicide at the end – sometimes oddly listed in two different places, hundreds of miles apart – and why the media have for fifty years always talked about the Germans as “Nazis”, a word which I don't remember hearing at the time.

My father's Navalese confirms it is largely a post-war invention, the glossary lists only other terms used to describe the Germans. It's not important, except I suppose to those who have made money out of it. Maybe Americans at the time spoke of Nazis? Google will tell us when the word, like “Holocaust” in 1970, first came into the common language.

Anyway, I have rambled on too long. I offer my best wishes for the New Year. I missed out on Christmas, as this computer had a bug. So this letter is not a Christmas appeal for financial support; many were kind enough to help when I wrote already in June about unexpected medical bills incurred in the United States – that problem has largely cleared – but I wanted to keep you in the loop (which might be called “Modernese”) and to say a sincere thank-you for your custom and continued support.

If you do however wish to give, please use one of my addresses below - I lost the old Post Office box in Key West last year; and I will then send you Royal Navalese as a thank-you gift as soon as it comes from the printer.

Yours very sincerely,

David Irving

Writing from the valley of the Doomed, Tuesday, 24 March 2020

Dear

Correction: Actually this is not a valley here, it is North Kensington, a relatively high point in London. Not much different from Crown Heights. But there is another difference: in my status letter for the New Year, I made clear that I was not asking for help to survive.

That has now changed. Its about the survival of all that is British. Through sluggish leadership - where is Lord Beaverbrook, now we need him? - Britain is slithering helplessly into the same deadly virus Maelstrom that threatens to engulf Italy and Spain, in which country lives one of my five daughters; another daughter lives with her family in Australia - same situation. We are told not to blame any country for CoronaVirus, or point fingers, so I won't.

I have been in London since January, back from writing in St Augustine. (My friends have a house there, on the St John's River, but they too have been compelled to self-quarantine: the USA will follow us).

Our famed National Heath Service. which is totally free, has had to delay my treatment for at least twelve weeks because of this unexpected threat, which I accept. Like thousands of others, I am obliged to live in isolation in my office (right) quite literally, day and night. Street level, but it's a bit like a prison cell here, bars on all the doors and windows, of course - it is North Kensington, after all. But I am accustomed to that, thanks to Vienna. Those in other countries have it far worse. No shortage of work here. I have several books to work on, in various stages of completion.

My father's book Royal Navalese (first published 1946) came from the printers as a proof yesterday: I still have to tweak it a bit, a labour of affection for both my late parents. That's him in a century old photo, taken in the eastern Mediterranean. Then Himmler, which I am just polishing. Himmler spent much of his 44 years creating an elite fighting force, the Waffen SS, which was the envy and the dread of his enemies.

Himmler's murder in British hands remains an unsolved riddle, what is now called a cold case. (Forget about "suicide", that is a smear dreamed up by the same folks who cunningly contrived the lie that he offered surrender in 1945 via Stockholm.)

Resisting the temptation to add old materials, I am waiting for a few more photographs, and completing the index, plus a foretaste of chapters to come. Regardless of what History has now been taught to think of him I have decided to sub-title Himmler with what he wrote his little girl, Gudrun in 1941, "In life, one must always be decent and brave and kind ..." I have not only the diaries, but many of the letters that he wrote.

Meanwhile I shall polish Churchill's War, vol. 3; it has been written in fact for thirty years or more. The Corona Virus is slowing cash flow - there are bills to pay - but I shall struggle through it. "You may not care what a stranger thinks," writes one stranger to me today, Saturday, "but I would like for you to know that you have helped influence my understanding of the world around me."

If you decide to give, I shall be extremely grateful. (I am also looking for a small amount of capital needed to help the Himmler print run. A signed copy of Royal Navalese will go (proportionately) to everybody who gives.)

Yours very sincerely,

David Irving
