The distinctive sail-shaped silhouette of Burj Al Arab is more than just a stunning hotel, it is a symbol of modern Dubai.

There are lots of great "how they did it" videos, yeah, but this planning and construction process show is just astounding. AS THE BURJ AL ARAB WAS BUILT, thirtysomething English architects designed it and solved massive problems while others engineered and decorated it etc.

It's the tallest and most luxurious hotel in the world, not the Burj Khalifa - - and sheesh, it took gumption!

When the gold comes out of the ground, you can hire the talent to build anything - marketing the space is another story.

Most of these places have more empty suites than could be sold in a really competitive environment.

'Take the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It’s impressive at 828 metres tall, but nearly a third of that (29%) is unoccupiable, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The Burj al Arab, also in Dubai, is much worse in this respect, with 39% of the entire building unusable. In fact, Dubai has five towers listed as the tallest buildings in “vanity height” – unusable height for the sake of it. Across these five, some 31% of total space is completely wasted."

Isn't that disgusting -- and no surprise. The WTC became a white elephant and I don't know if it was ever fully occupied, one of the alleged reasons they did 9/11 (lucky Larry!). It's nothing new either. My ancestors built this textbook case of overreach

BTW, does your Guardian link above work for you? Not for me, but I googled the article. Anybody else?

Most big ideas are disastrous -- ever noticed? ;)

Everybody with dough wants to build the tallest. It's like who's got the biggest swingin'?

Can't get that stupid link to work. Sorry. :- (

THANKS FOR REPORTING. So it's not just an NN problem. Pinguinite, will you please consider changing it so the entire hyperlink appears at all times? This will enable another very valuable thing -- quickly copying complete URLs, no matter how old or even obsolete. I'm constantly doing such for various purposes.

The problem with that is some very long URLs forcibly extend the page borders left/right and then scrolling left/right is required to read everything on the page.

But even when the readable URL is shorted with the "..." in the middle, the entire URL is still copyable, or should be, by right clicking on the URL and selecting "copy link". I clicked on URL and it appeared to work fine. That can happen even if the whole URL is not readable.

Doesn't happen to be true with randge's above -- it's not a long URL, and right clicking it I can only copy the red part.
