Bush Threatens Veto of Spending Bills AP & Washington Post ^ | 4/7/6 | Andrew Taylor

Posted on 04/07/2006 7:51:24 PM PDT by Crackingham

President Bush said Friday he would use his power to veto spending bills if Congress does not cut the federal budget as he has asked. In over five years in office, Bush has never vetoed any bill. But he said that restraining spending was crucial to cutting the deficit in half by 2009 as he has promised. "If necessary, I will enforce spending restraint through the exercise of the veto," the president said.

Bush's brief statement from the White House's Diplomatic Reception Room came a day after feuds among rival Republican factions led House GOP leaders to pull a $2.8 trillion budget blueprint from the floor. The collapse of the measure threatens to send Republicans into the fall election season with deficits on the rise and no plan in place to contain them. Separate talks aimed at extending Bush's previously passed tax cuts for capital gains and dividends stalled. With lawmakers headed home for a two-week recess with few accomplishments to show constituents, the president said Congress must break the logjam.

"Our economy grows when the American people make the decisions about how to save, spend and invest their money," he said. "To keep our economy creating jobs and opportunity, Congress needs to show its trust in the American people and make the tax relief permanent."

Bush took on those, mostly Democrats, who oppose the extension of some of those tax cuts, saying the lower rates have helped create 5.1 million new jobs since August 2003. "The facts have proven the critics wrong 5.1 million times over," he said.

The budget measure's demise was the result of opposition among moderates and a power struggle between a faction of conservatives and the House Appropriations Committee. Republican unity was essential to passing the plan, since no Democrats were expected to back it.

To: BARLF I thought Congress authorized spending not the President. Only Congress authorized to write and pass laws.

Is this correct

Correct although the president presents a budget of his own. Two thirds of the budget is mandatory and any cuts must come out of the remaining one third. Usually the president gives a budget ceiling and as long as the budget comes in at the ceiling the president usually accepts it. Thats why so far there have been no vetos. The budget has met these guidelines. A 2.9% deficient is actually pretty low as is a 4.7% unemployment. We also have a 3.9 increase in GDP and it is 11 trillion dollars. Its like saying one makes $100 and owes $6 which is a 6% deficient. Your salary increases to $1000 and you increase your debt to $30 and then you have 3% deficient and everyone goes crazy because the deficient has increased from $3 to $30 when as a percentage it has decreased from 6% to 3%. The deficent in 1975 was 6%

Perhaps Dubai was the first time you heard him issue the threat of a VETO.

But a number of the folks on this board and in conservative circles that feigned outrage that the *first* time he threatens a VETO was over Dubai, were lying through their damn teeth. He's threatened it many times. never done it, but threatened it. On spending, on stem cell research...

Frankly I'm not impressed people are NOW remembering he's made the threat before so they can mock him. Not when many of the same pretended he'd never done so during the height of Dubai.

To: Crackingham Never have I seen so many posters here on FR so down on Bush. It's his own damned fault.

To: Extremely Extreme Extremist I wonder if he's afraid the veto pen was used on Ms Lewinsky? I'm sure they can find him a new pen!

To: jwh_Denver It's his own damned fault. EXACTLY. It isn't us, it's him and his policies. His "compassionate conservatism" has been too long on "compassion" and only rhetorical nonsense on the "conservative" part.

To: Crackingham The big rubber stamp on his desk that says "NO" has long dried out and is proceeding to crumble into little bits.

To: Siena Dreaming Has he said before he would veto a spending bill? Sure, when there wasn't enough spending in it.

They're so upset by an impasse over a budget bill, when the lies used to get us into an unwinnable war in Iraq (soon to be joined, if Sy Hersh's reporting is to be believed, by a war against Iran) seem to upset them not a whit.

Well, according to just about every poll out there, 2/3rds of the country is pretty fed up with Bush. Only about a 1/3 still support him. That 2/3 number has got to include Freeper types. I've been seeing this as well - things that I would think would normally upset the Freepers, like Harry Taylor's remarks the other night, are not getting much attention. I think Jim Rob is going to have to make up a lot more fake IDs as the real Freepers seem as fed up with Bush as we are.

Must be pretty lonely when the vast majority of the country despises you.

So Interesting an observation, with profound conclusions.

I read your linked Sy Hersh article. Very troubling to say the least.
