NEWARK, N.J. -- The men both stood in a busy hardware store parking lot, but their lives were far apart.

On one end, Oscar Bautista of El Salvador said he had been waiting more than three hours for a job. Across the lot, Art Jackson loaded potting soil into his Dodge Durango. He complained that immigrants are making it harder for Americans to keep good jobs, especially blacks.

''You need to take care of home first,'' said Jackson, an African-American phone salesman from northern New Jersey.

Blacks and Latinos are often united on social and political issues. But they often differ when it comes to immigration.

Newcomers make black progress harder, said Wesley Crawford, who works at Source of Knowledge, a bookstore in Newark. ''It's a misconception that they're taking jobs we don't want. If you give people a good job, they will work.''

While Hispanic immigrants have protested a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration, the nation's most prominent black leaders have all been to New Orleans to try to stop the upcoming local election. Shortly after the storm, Jesse Jackson and others complained that Latino workers seemed to have more access than blacks to rebuilding jobs.

Bruce S. Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said that African-American and Latino bonds are strong and that his ''spirit was there'' at the immigration marches.

Most of the immigration protests have focused on a bill passed by the U.S. House that would make illegal immigration a felony, and all but one black voting member of Congress, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee, was against it, according to the Congressional Black Caucus.

Still, many blacks feel threatened, said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a black writer in Los Angeles.

''The civil rights leaders say we're all united, but the average person on the street is taking great offense at this group coming in and essentially taking over,'' he said.

It's snowing in PA, GJ?

Yep.

I just looked at the radar. S.C. is clear though.

Egad, snow in April....gotta love PA.

I'm elated Santorum is going down the tubes. I don't know jack about Casey, but what's the difference? It's time to throw the bums out and replace them with new bums.

I don't know jack about Casey

I've met Casey and he's a decent guy. He's a Dem. but he's not owned by the corporations or contolled by K-Street like Santorum is. As you know, his old man was Governor for two terms in the '80s. But, I don't know Casey's stance on the immigration stuff. That could be a deciding factor for my vote.

Santorum started his campaign early and was running ads on TV a few months ago. Oddly, when a lot of areas in Pa. announced they were buying Diebold machines, he pulled his ads. It's going to get nasty in Pa. this fall.

They already pushed most of the black folks out of their traditional neighbor hoods in L.A. and it's spreading.

Very true.

The fact that Santorum and Spector are tethered at the hip doesn't help Ricky boy on the immigration issue. He turned me off years ago, so frankly I don't give a rip who wins. The elitists need the rope, not the vote (g)

This whole affair reeks of 'divide and rule.' Lax immigration laws, open borders, encouragement of arrogance/hate/nationalism in legal & illegal immigrants equals one thing = anything which diverts energy/insights away from the real culprits and them being toppled from their throne/control. Anything which divides is fair game, be it religion, color, race, nationality, politics, class, generation gap, dope, fashion, music, whatever can be used to keep people from thinking and as one unit will and has been used. The importation of so many outsiders suggests a certain desperation on their hold of things (ie - as if the old tried and tested methods are somehow failing?)

The net is a great equalizer, Christine. Even though there's a legion of dismis/info whores out there selling their souls, they can't escape the fact that after decades, nay, centuries of mind/press control, that their time is coming to an end. We may not see the free expression of the end result, but we can help seed its progress for the future.

The people who have been most screwed by this invasion have been the blacks. Not only are they losing out on jobs, but the neighborhoods that have been traditionally black are now filled with illegals crowding them out. Their kids are fighting them in the schools. I see it in my own neighborhood. The black "leadership" has abandoned its own people just as surely as the white leadership has. I think black and white Americans have to unite and recognize the common threat of this invasion. We have far more in common with each other than either of us has with the Latinos.

I'd much rather live in the average Mexican neighborhood than the average Black one.

For starters, their music of choice sounds an awful lot like polka.

Secondly, they have a good work ethic and are generally conservative.

Third, the home cooking is better.

Fourth, while they're living 10-to-a-trailer situations right now, they have their sights solidly set on becoming middle class, without expecting anyone to just "gift" that position to them. Reparations, anyone?

Fifth, they seem genuinely friendly and open if you have a chance to get to know them.

I love children, but I can never finish a whole one.

I guess it's what you're used to. I grew up in a largely black neighborhood and have been around blacks all my life, so I'm very comfortable with them and their ways. I think the two biggest problems that have occurred with black people over the past 40 years was the introduction of drugs into their neighborhoods, esp cocaine (which the CIA was probably behind), and the proliferation of welfare. Welfare was created by white elites to provide jobs for their masses of colleged educated do nothings who form a large part of the govt bureaucracy, and to keep black people in a state of learned helplessness and to stop them from rioting. The best thing that could happen in the black community would be to end welfare. Or at least to change it radically so that single parents can NO LONGER receive welfare as all it's done is help destroy black families. The other thing would be to require work for welfare - perhaps doing public works jobs.

Those two things - drugs and welfare - are the biggest problems among the blacks. The two have combined to create this extremely unhealthy gangstah mindset that is destroying a generation of young black men.

As for Latinos - I don't care for them myself. I see that they're hard working, in general, and good family people (at least until they get into the drugs and welfare like black America has - then you'll see a change in that). I absolutely hate the sound of Spanish. HATE it with a passion. That's just my personal idiosyncracy but it drives me crazy. I really want people to start speaking English pretty much exclusively in public or go back the bleep where they came from. I have no patience with it. I also find them snotty and clique-ish (sp?) unlike black people, whom I always find very friendly and usually very helpful. I would never ask a Latino for help. I think they look down on Americans and they really think their excrement is ice cream.

So maybe it is what you're used to.
