Teenager Stops Would-Be Intruder With One Shot

May 18, 2020

by Jason Hanson

One evening, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD in North Carolina responded to a home invasion...

At the time of the home invasion, a grandmother was at home with her grandson.

According to police, the suspects identified as 18-year-old Isai Delcid and his 22-year-old brother Carlos Delcid, attempted to break into a home around 5 p.m.

The brothers parked their car in the driveway...

Walked up the steps to the back porch...

And tried to break in through a back window.

That's when the 14-year old grandson came to the window and told them to stop. The suspects didn’t listen and that's when the situation turned deadly - for the bad guys.

The 14-year-old fired three shots from a Glock handgun.

The younger of the criminals, Isai, was shot and died at the scene.

Older brother Carlos fled, but was quickly arrested by police, who tracked his electronic monitor.

(He was already on probation for previously breaking into the same home.)

The grandfather, George W., said he took his grandson to the shooting range and taught him to use the pistol.

George told authorities, "It's not something you can be proud of. But, I'm happy the way it turned out. Because my wife is getting over an illness.”

Clearly, this is a case of self-defense. A young man did what was necessary to defend his grandmother and himself.

There are two important things to note in this story...

The first is that George taught his grandson how to use his Glock handgun.

Second, this pistol (it was a .380) is small enough that a 14-year old could shoot it accurately when his life depended on it. And not only did this pistol stop a home invasion…

It's also a very popular option for concealed carry because of its small size.

The single stack magazine means the gun can be more compact and thin. And, there are a lot of good single stack pistols on the market these days.

To name a few...

The Sig Sauer P290RS: this 9mm pistol has a thick, somewhat fat grip, but includes grip panels that can be changed to suit the shooter. The pistol has a short overall length of just 5.5 inches, allowing for easy concealment.

The double action trigger features a 9-pound trigger pull, with a full reset for follow up shots.

At about $500 new, the P290RS is a quality single stack 9mm that won’t break the budget.

S&W M&P Shield: Smith and Wesson combined all the best features of their full-size M&P line and packed them into a small, lightweight 9mm pistol.

The Shield is a polymer-framed, striker-fired subcompact pistol with a seven-round staggered-stack magazine.

In addition, the Shield also has a hinged trigger that's light and quick for follow up shots.

The overall length is 6.1”, with a barrel length of 3.1”. The Shield sells for about $450 new.

Ruger LC9: The LC9s is a striker fired model with the same specs as the original LC9, except with a shorter, lighter trigger.

Plus, Ruger made the LC9s PRO, which eliminated the thumb safety and the magazine disconnect.

This pistol is another popular choice for concealed carry and it's easy to see why:

Weighing just 20.1 ounces fully loaded (it has a 7-round capacity), and has an overall length of 6”. You can pick up a Ruger LC9 for about $475 new.

Hopefully, this list will help you weigh your options and decide on the best single stack pistol for you, if this is something you’re interested in.

God bless Grandpa for having the wisdom to teach his Grandson how to safely use the pistol.

... on probation for previously breaking into the same home ...

Wtf? Something tells me that there is more to this story.

I am not too sure.

In your line of work I can imagine you run into all sorts of people on both sides of the law.

How many of them have the real smarts to be doing what they are doing?

Some crooks are really stupid. And some are smart.

Look at one girl who was out jogging. Some guy passed her by a couple of times and then kidnapped her, murdered her and disposed of the body.

I can't say the girl was very bright to be out like that, but it was her home town.

Then there was John Wayne Gacy. He was a real freak that would dress like a clown and lure young people into his home in NW suburban Chicago, then drug them and molest them and murder them.

He buried the bodies under his house and spread lime on them. They only caught him after he ran out of room under the house and dumped a couple of bodies in the Des Plaines River.

He was convicted and put to death by lethal injection.

Why didn't these young people let anyone know where they were going and what was happening? God only knows. :-/
