Germany cuts may just be the beginning

Outgoing US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grennel finally tackled US troop cut announcement for Germany, saying it is in keeping with Trump’s position, and that he also wants cuts in Japan and South Korea.

Grennel said he doesn’t think this sends a wrong signal because its been Trump’s position all along that the deployments cost the US too much.

In addressing South Korea, it is likely the administration is trying to scare yet more money out of them after months of failed negotiations. Trump was always expected to seek more money from Germany, but was unlikely to get it.

Polls have showed that while German politicians are somewhat split, voters much preferred a US pullout to more military spending. Die Linke MPs enthusiastically said the US cuts could save money.

South Korea has already offered a substantial increase, but are far from Trump’s unprecedented demands. Japan is also expected to oppose massive new demands from the US.

What Trump wants, Trump doesn't necessarily get from the military.

That is an utterly biased OPINION.

Honest answer, what three countries do NOT want US to withdraw from Japan etc?????

And about damn time.

Abe of Japan nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Korean War.

The U.S. therefore no longer needs to have troops stationed there, or in Japan. He richly deserves that Prize and that is a feather in his cap toward four more years. ;)

However Japan will immediately go nuclear with missiles.

With their past history, no one wants such.

If we need to have a conversation regarding "defunding police" we might be better to think about defunding the international police. The UN, Nato, and their associated agencies and agents have served their purpose, if that can honestly be said, and Americans have been paying a disproportionate share of the expense in money and blood.

Its not opinion that Trump wanted the military on the streets of DC and he didn't get them.

And who cares what countries want the US to relieve them of the cost of a military? The Germans don't want us leaving Germany. Might cost them some of their Euros.

Ada...

That is totally devoid of rational thinking, lacking of history and missing of any geo/political background.

Years ago, when Reagan was President, I had the pleasure of spending two hours in conversation with three ministers from the West German government that were in US meeting with Reagan and State Dept.

There was one predominant concern in their minds. It was Russia. They well understood that without the US, Russia would be sitting on the English Channel. They knew at end of WWII that Germany could never depend on France and England. Russia TO THIS DAY HUNGERS TO TAKE ALL OF WESTERN EUROPE.

Only the US military prevents that from happening.

Disdain and disinterest of history can be fatal.

Cyni, I have to respectively disagree to a point.

I agree history has to be respected and remembered. I also think it necessary to consider the vast advances in weapons that can reach out and effectively restrain the intentions of any government unwilling to live at peace with their neighbors. We have the ability to see every country/border around the world with specificity. The troops in Germany is an expense that Americans bear that the Germans have responsibility to fund.

George Washington warned against entanglements in Europe's never ending feuds. I think he was correct to a certain degree excepting any attempt by a rogue element attempting to invade other nations.

EDIT: I'm sure that the Germans will always claim a fear or threat posed by Russia. (The Democrats seem to have a similar strategy).

Yes and before the outbreak of WW II, German air crews were training in Russia to stay under the radar of the Versailles Treaty.

Hitler cancelled the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact when he launch Operation Barbarossa. ;)

NATO was created to assure the Germans against a Soviet attack. If they are still worried, they should build their own defenses. All NATO is these days is a fig leaf for US aggression.

They keep moving east. Now there are trying to gobble up Ukraine. Ukraine has always been the breadbasket of Russia with its crops of wheat. The Russians, of course, are resistant to this idea.

And the Russians have also tightly controlled gas supplies to western Europe thru Gazprom company. It would not take much provocation to close the pipeline. ;)

Trump did when he dropped inert bombs in the mountains of the North just to show we could do it to major North Korean population centers.

This action caused Kim to step across the DMZ to embrace the peacenik Moon and the war was over.

Abe of Japan nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Korean War. ;)

You are talking about when Lincoln's Ambassador to Russia convinced the Tsar to send the Russian navy to New York Harbor and San Francisco Bay.

The British had considered entering the war on the side of the South. When the British saw this, they changed their minds about entering the war. ;)

The Germans want Nord Stream 2 for delivery of Russian gas. The Russians need to avoid the Ukrainian thieves and their bottleneck. The Americans don't want the Germans to buy Russian gas. IOW the Germans and Russians want to do business but the US is doing everything it can to queer the deal.

The Germans are no longer afraid of Georgi Zukov's tanks.

The U.S. sent 150 M-1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. But the Russians have 1,500 tanks in opposition. :-/
