People used to say that South Africa was 20 years behind the rest of the Western world. Television, for example, came late to South Africa (but so did pornography and the gay* rights movement).

Today, however, South Africa may be the grim model of the future Western world, for events in America reveals trends chillingly similar to those that destroyed our country.

America's structures are Western. Your Congress, your lobbying groups, your free speech, and the way ordinary Americans either get involved or ignore politics are peculiarly Western, not the way most of the world operates. But the fact that only about a third of Americans deem it important to vote is horrifying in light of how close you are to losing your Western character.

South Africa is a better country today.

America successfully dismantled it's own Apartheid system in the 60's and avoided a race war due to the far reaching genius and vision of MLK.

South Africa may have done the same but didn't.

They should be happy that despite the intransigency of the NumbNuts, they did not have a race war.

South Africa is a better country today.

How would you know?

Have you ever been there?

Primarily because any system of racial superiority runs on fear.

Once the oppressed don' fear you, you either kill 'em or make a deal.

SouthAfrikaners made a deal.

What makes you think Apartheid was based on "racial superiority"?

Do you even know what the word means?

Have you ever lived out of the USA? Have you ever been to Africa? What do you base your opinions on, TV?

WoW! Why don't you tell me what it was based on?

Goodwill to Man and Kumbaya, I assume.

So tell us, what do you know about the world, besides (of course) what you see on TV?

So what was Apartheid based on? You gonna tell or just keep asking rhetorical questions.

Don't know much about the world. And as an American, I don't care. As long as we terrorise it to preserve 3 dollar a gallon gas.

So what was Apartheid based on?

It means and was based on separate development.

Maybe you should go to Joburg and walk around at night, to see what a success SA is today.

Or better yet, ask the families of the hundreds of white farmers who have been murdered what a great and happy multicultural paradise SA is today.

Seperate and most definitely not equal. Please, the distribution of state resources was designed to permanently keep the blacks in a state of semistarvation, ignorance and crushing poverty.

I won't go to Johannesburg, are you nuts? Tho on the bright side, it's prolly safer than Baghdad.

When a system ends, some violence will happen. If the South Africans had moved in the 50's or 60's the violence may very well have not happened.

Either way, the dignitiy of the Black African was trampled on every day.

Now a few whites get a little payback. Lemme get my handkerchief.

It is more serious in South Africa than a few whites getting payback. Their economy is very bad now, bad for everyone. Whatever inequities existed, the solution found was not healthy for anyone.

Based on what? We never get news about SA, if there were race riots or things were that unbearable for the whites, we might hear about it.

Googling South Africa or any of it's major cities doesn't show any state of chaos. Try it.

Shows more or less a normal democratic country with it's share of bumps.

No way is anyone going to convince me that SA was some paragon of Utopia in the apartheid days. It was, for a very small bunch of White SA's. For the rest, it was HELL.

Yes, things have improved and the country is better for the decisions it made in the 90's.

For the rest, it was HELL.

So hellish that South Africa then, too, had an immigration problem from the rest of Africa.

What civilization they had was due to whites. Period.
