The big news about the Dixie Chicks this week was that they were still around. I was mildly amazed, too; its been 20 years since the pop-country trios heyday and roughly 10 since they became an ongoing sociopolitical concern instead of a musical one.
Props to them for showing up in my news feed again, I guess, although I felt a bit like I ought to have been receiving news about them via MySpace.
Secondary to this was the fact that the Dixie Chicks were dropping the word Dixie from their name due to its associations with the Bad Old Days in the American South. Mores the pity.
The official line is that this move was made because of the current cultural climate, although one cant help but notice the felicitous timing of the minor controversy and the upcoming, deeply unanticipated release of their first studio album since 2006s Taking the Long Way in just a few weeks......

The problem being that the new choice is hateful, hypocritical, banal, racist, violent and anarchic. Open msg to Bud Cummings who notified me:
//////////Isn't it despicable? We always told America the Confederate flag at the SC state house was the finger stopping the dyke from breaking -- and we were right. ALL OF THIS goes back to NIKKI HALEY'S final 2015 betrayal. The current and permanent USSR-style cultural purge started immediately and almost instantly resulted in the murder of a black Confederate activist. Did Nikki care? Naah -- in the words of Cairman Mao, you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.
You were there for the heat of the battle and one of the wins we had. You can die in good conscience -- but not soon please 8-) When you hear people complaining about the state of things with even the Lincoln Memorial getting irreparably vandalized by Black Lives Natter types, tell them THANK NIKKI HALEY and other SOULLESSE SOUTH CAROLINA REPUBLICAN THUGS.//////////
I thought how refreshing that the WSJ produces such a piece with none of the usual slaps and jabs at my South. Whoops -- wrong 'W' and 'J' ;)
