Richard Petty’s historic 200th win came on the Fourth of July in 1984. It has been 36 years since this historic day and today I want to revisit it and bring it back to the forefront of discussion.

Kind of a neat story. Back when the country had some dignity and sanity.

When I started driving trucks for IWX we had to start on the relay out to Kingman, Arizona.

There was a race track over there nearby where I was living and the roaring cars would keep me awake in he evening when I needed to sleep.

It was hard staying awake at night on that run but I did it.

One time in Oklahoma on I-40 it was snowing hard. I was driving and I look across the middle. A double jack knifed and went in the middle. The 2nd trailer flipped over.

We switched drivers at Flying J at Mile 40 My co-driver told me later the middle at Mile 15 looked like a junk yard there was so much stuff in there.

When we got out to Kingman there must have been an iceberg hanging off the DOT bumper on tail of trailer.

It was good to see Reagan again after so many years.

When I lived in Chicago in early 80s we heard he was coming to visit at Gordon Tech High School. The cops would not allow anyone on California Ave where he was coming in.

But we found a house with a wide yard and we could look thru the chain link fence and see him when he got out of the limo. ;)
