RIO DE JANEIRO — To Marina Lee Colbachini, it was a family tradition. Each spring, she would join the throngs who descended on a nondescript city in southern Brazil, don a 19th-century hoop skirt and square dance to country music.

The theme of the annual festival: the Confederate States of America.

It’s one of history’s lesser-known episodes. After the Civil War, thousands of defeated Southerners came to Brazil to self-exile in a country that still practiced slavery. For decades, their descendants have thrown a massive party that now attracts thousands of people to the twin cities of Americana and Santa Bárbara d’Oeste to celebrate all things Dixie. The Confederate flag? Everywhere.

Why do Brazilians and others around the world fly the Confederate flag?

On flagpoles and knickknacks. Emblazoned on the dance floor. Clutched by men clad in Confederate battle gray. Decorating the grounds of the cemetery that holds the remains of veterans of the rebel army — the immigrants known here as the confederados.

In a country that has long been more preoccupied with class divisions than racism, the Confederate symbols, stripped of their American context, never registered much notice. But now, as the racial reckoning in the United States following the killing of George Floyd inspires a similar reexamination of values in Brazil, that has begun to change.

They were from Fl. GA. SC. VA.

All born Yankees by misfortune, rebels by choice.

Eugene C. Harter, a descendant of the Confederados, wrote an interesting book on the subject:

The Lost Colony of the Confederacy

YES, and it's one of several on the subject. My review was titled From The Mississippi to the Amazon, which I now see is a in Doris Day lyric :-s

My tax guy prizes the rebel flag and has gone to the Confederado bash in Brazil for I don't know how many decades. 'Twould be lovely if he'd ever lifted a finger to save Dixie from the wrecking ball, but to my knowledge he hasn't. Had no idea there was anything wrong with Nikki Nimrata Randhawa Haley!

One of the great consolations of the hellish, multi-generational Cancel Age is the large number of Northerners who have come out in support of Dixie, her flags, her heroes, her songs and culture etc. It's been extremely moving at times, from the cases that turn up of C-flag display in CO or IL or Canada to the kind things 'copperheads' have said about this region from both above and below the Mason-Dixon line.

'Twas in my 1990s NJ Populist Party days that a first-generation Ukrainian/Lithuanian-American friend started educating me about the South as nobody else ever had -- even my staunch rebel Grandfather.

An ethnic German engineer I met and made friends with in Chile several years ago told me that his family came to Chile before World War 2, not after. He explained that whenever he meets somebody, that person always wants to know which kind of German immigrant he is -- pre-war or post- war? I told him I wouldn't mind if he was post-war, that I didn't blame any German who left war-ravaged Communist Europe for a better life in South America.

He liked that; he hated Communists.
