The left-wing tech boss argued that there was “nothing illegitimate” about it taking additional weeks for the results of the presidential election to be counted. And if Zuckerberg says it’s fine, it probably isn’t. During an interview with Axios, Zuckerberg was asked about the likelihood of the results being delayed and left unknown on the night of the election. “I think the dynamic that you’re talking about is really important, which is that we may not know the final result on election night,” the host said. In response, the Facebook boss said that the reason American voters might not know the result of the election in a timely manner is actually to ensure it’s a “fair” election. Despite the fact that this is virtually unheard of in American elections. “One of the things that I think we and other media need to start doing in preparing the American people that there’s nothing illegitimate about this election taking additional days, or even weeks, to make sure that all of the votes are counted,” he said. “In fact, that might be important to make sure that this is a legitimate and fair election.” The idea that the United States will not know the results of an election on election night because more people will be voting by mail – including people who were mailed ballot papers for people who no longer live in their homes – is virtually unheard of in the United States and stands in stark contrast to how elections work in other first-world countries. In the United Kingdom, for instance, mail-in ballots are used frequently and there are often accusations of fraud, but regardless, the results of national elections are still known on the night. So why does America need weeks and weeks? Zuckerberg suggested that Facebook plans on using their huge reach to push the message that delayed results mean a “fair election” in what sounds like a propaganda campaign to stop Republicans from rightly noting how outrageous this is, and how it opens up the election to the possibility of fraud and inaccurate results. “So we’re going to do a bunch of different messaging around that, just to make sure that people know that that’s normal,” he said.
