A man accused of killing the mother of his 1-year-old daughter allegedly smeared himself in blackface and donned a fake beard to throw cops off the trail. It didn’t work.
Andrew Charles Beard, 33, of Rowlett, Texas, turned himself in on Monday Oct. 5 after a warrant was issued for his arrest, The Dallas Morning News reported last week.
He’s being held on $1 million bail, charged with murdering ex- girlfriend Alyssa Burkett, 24, just before 9 a.m. as she arrived at work on Friday Oct. 2 in Carrollton, Texas, about 20 miles northwest of Dallas.

Police arrived to find the young mother, a manager at the apartment complex, with a “gunshot wound to the head and multiple stab wounds to her torso and arms,” The Dallas Morning News reported, citing an affidavit. Though she was being treated by colleagues, she died at the scene, the local Carrollton Leader reported, citing an affidavit.
Her parents, co-workers and current boyfriend told police she had expressed the fear that Beard would kill her. She also suspected he was stalking her, and officers found tracking devices on both her car and her boyfriend’s.
The former couple had been involved in a contentious custody battle, and Burkett had been awarded custody on Sept. 30, the Carrollton Leader said. The child, unharmed, is now a ward of the state, People reported.
Two witnesses described her assailant as a Black man. But police found dark liquid foundation and a fake beard encrusted with cosmetic glue in a car they believed belonged to Beard.
On Sept. 4, Burkett had started a GoFundMe page for legal expenses to help fund a contentious custody battle with her ex, according to reports. That has now been converted into a fund-raiser for her funeral.
