Matthew McConaughey Reveals His Dad Died of a Heart Attack During Sex: “I Couldn’t Believe It”

“Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except for mom.”

By Nicol Natale Oct 21, 2020

Matthew McConaughey opened up about his father’s death in his new memoir.

The actor revealed that his dad had a heart attack while having sex.

He also elaborated on his parents “tumultuous” relationship.

Matthew McConaughey is opening up about his father James McConaughey’s death in his new memoir, Greenlights. The actor released an exclusive excerpt to People as part of his cover story, and he detailed the unexpected way his father passed away in 1992.

“I got a call from my mom. ‘Your dad died,’” McConaughey recalls of what Mary Kathlene McCabe said to him after his father’s death. “My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except for mom.”

Apparently, it was exactly what his dad predicted. “He’d always told me and my brothers, ‘Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin’ love to your mother.’ And that’s what happened. He had a heart attack when he climaxed.”

Sex can trigger a heart attack, but it’s important to note that it’s extremely rare. According to Harvard Medical School, the risk of a 50-year-old man who exercises regularly to have a heart attack during sex is 1 chance in a million per hour.

The Gentlemen star also elaborated on his parents’ “tumultuous” relationship. “Look, they were at times violent,” McConaughey said in an interview with People. “That is how they communicated. They were divorced twice, married three times. I mean, yeah, it was like the Pacific Ocean in a storm.”

“But, as I say in the book, those moments were so quickly, always, 100% of the time, so quickly superseded by the love and the humanity,” he continued. McConaughey then recalled a time where one of his brothers got caught smoking weed. He was disciplined by his parents, and then they all went out and enjoyed a nice meal together.

One phrase his parents say would always say? “I love you Matthew, I just don’t like you right now,” after he would make a mistake. “The love will always be superseded by far and envelop everything, and sort of overran however ugly the situation may have been. The love was never in question,” he explained.

His own relationship with wife Camila Alves McConaughey is completely different. “I don’t remember the last time I raised my voice to Camila,” McConaughey said.

The couple shares three kids, Levi, Livingston, and Vida. “I think I do a lot to maintain and care for each relationship in my family, well enough so that it doesn’t get to a point where I’m exacerbated or I have to raise my voice,” he said. “Camila and I don’t have a relationship like my mom and dad. We have a love that we never question.”

McConaughey spent 52 days alone in the desert without electricity, handwriting essays about his life for Greenlights. You can pick up a copy of his memoir on October 20.
