For all you hunters out there.
I was at a camp in Eagle River, Wisconsin when I was young. They had a guy there from Wisconsin Department of Fish and Game. I asked him about poachers and it struck a raw nerve.
When I worked for Illinois State Highways I was out on west end near Fox River. I was making a left turn to go north. There was a big doe grazing alongside the road. The strobe lights must have spooked her. She ran right in front of me and I clipped her with the plow. She skidded into the paved median. By the time I turned around and got back there she had her last gasp. She was dead.
So I called Joe, the foreman to come out there that I had hit a deer. When he got there he said, "Are you sure she's dead? I don't want to get kicked."
I said, "Yeah, look. Her eyes are open. They always die with their eyes open." So we threw her on tailgate of pick up and drove a quarter mile to where the gravel pit was. I pulled her off in a clean bank of snow and cut off the hind quarters. I ran he rest of night with heater off and took them home and aged them in fridge a few days.
I gave one to my neighbor . He cooked my up a plate of stew for me and he fed his family too. The other I brought into the yard. We had a guy there that used to be a butcher. He said it was perfect. So we cut it up and fried it up on the stove.
