I haven't been able to eat boughten bread for at least 10 years, because it all has soybean oil in it now, which I avoid like the plague. Just about any baked food item from the grocery store has it.
I don't eat soybean oil, any hydrogenated oil, or high fructose corn syrup. Food costs a little more when you avoid that stuff, but not so much more that anyone should ever HAVE to eat that stuff.
Haven't eaten a doughnut in over 30 years.
I don't travel much any more, but back when I did, finding wholesome food to eat was a challenge. Restaurants generally can't be trusted.
You're probably a helluva lot smarter on that stuff than I am. I know soy and that friggin' HFCS are no-go zones for me. As far as oils go, I pretty much stick to real butter and bacon grease that I save.
(Edit:) My primary sweetener is stevia. I read that it's supposed to make you sterile or something, at my age, that's not a big concern.
Twice I came close enough to death that it changed my life. Not as close as you -- they didn't pull the sheet over my head -- but closer than I wanted to get.
Years ago when our twins were born seriously premature, the neonatal intensive care nurse gave my wife and me one of those old Polaroid cameras that develops the picture right at the camera. "Take all the pictures you want", she said. I said well, they're not going to look very cute with all those tubes running in and out of them everywhere. "Just take some pictures of your babies", she said. So we did. I didn't realize until the next day that she was trying to tell us that our babies might not live through the night, and that might be the only pictures we would ever have. That kind of thing changes you. Forever.
