Just curious about this. Have seen a fee posts with words that would get people banned on other sites.

Dont get me wrong here.

I want to be able to use those words, in fact, its actually liberating to be the true anti establishment still.

Most here are in same boat as me, hippies with actual brains and principles.

Well.... my go to free speech site is closing on Christmas and they are all wondering where to go. If you guys want traffic, and tons of posts rivaling the good old days, I want some guidance here. Ive made a few posts about this place, maybe I should not have?

Anyways, if you want traffic? Make an account at VOAT, its constantly down, but it WILL be up sporadically until Christmas day.

The topic & concept of "free speech" is one that has been experimented and bantered about ad nauseam and after much scientific experimentation, trial and error, challenges and reviews spanning about 2 decades, the grand official conclusion is......

....only one person here exercises freedom of speech.

And that's the site owner. Period, end of story. And at the moment, that would be me.

Everyone else here makes comments at my pleasure. And the day I decide any person here no longer impresses me then I make them go away.

That's how it works. That's the only way it CAN work, because I pay for the place here. I have received donations which are of course appreciated, but this site is free for people to use as long as I allow it. If anyone else truly had free speech rights on this site, then it would mean I couldn't morally or legally kick them off when I get tired of them. And since I do have that right, then it means no one else truly has "free speech" to say anything they want here.

Having said that, I'm a pretty tolerant guy. I don't like censorship. I did say once I didn't want the word "nigger" used here, not because I believe the term has any magical powers, but because half of the planet does believe it has magical powers, and there is a certain inference made by stupid people who would conclude that things I allow here reflect my own views. And that can be financially harmful to someone who is a freelance software developer.

So, do feel free to invite others here. I'd welcome most people. The only rule is, don't piss off the site owner.

And ya,.... am now glad most people went to other forums. Most on VOAT would die if they couldn’t say that word at least once in every post.

They use it like vulgarians use the f bomb, as an endearment, as a curse, as an exclamation, etc.

The dumb ones went to Poal, smart ones to Notabug, and the tweeners to Ruqqus.

I consider all of those sites to be less user friendly than here. Your work making these sites has stood up over time. Pretty impressive honestly.

The software is dated, to be sure. But it still works. Usually. Lately there've been complaints about posts not showing up. It is a real problem but I've not experienced it myself which I need to to resolve it.

But the other part of a good forum is managing, and Christine has run this site for most of it's lifespan of some 15 years or more. Managing has been about simple since I took over since it's not nearly as divisive as it once was. Hell, for a while there after Christine left, no one was managing the place, but it was no problem either. Facebook has pretty much taken over the political discussion market but that may be changing now that FB has started fact checking, yanking and banning people for advocating political views they don't like. FB is also chock full of advertisements which I think people are getting sick of. Then there's the tracking. FB even montiors private communications. You can test it easily enough by sending a note to someone about something reasonably obscure, like outboard engines for boats or hot air baloon rides and then see what if you get related targeted advertisements.

But it would be great to have this place return to its prior glory days.

It's good enough for us old Fortran dinosaurs (looking for that asteroid).

I'm not trying to bust anybody's balls with some of the shit I post, maybe just trying to relive some of my "glory days" fighting the bullshit cold war. And I'm just damned bored now.

If'n I get outta line reign me in in PM, I can still follow directives, but I'm so old and crotchety, don't not expect some static.

When Chrissy and you founded this joint, y'all did pretty good filtering out the riff-raff. The members helped you along over the years.

You've accumulated a pretty nice batch of "deplorables" over the years, and I hope Chrissy knows that too.

This place is now the creme de la creme. Ya. She had a fire and an attitude that is missed. And yes, she molded the group. Now....

A decade after? She left? Only ones left are the ones who truly get it.

For those people, what seems like a dunk gimme is viewed by everyone else as moonbattery. Part of the war on truth, for sure.

And. Here we are. Seems kinda lonely, lol. Gah, guess I shoulda figured out twenty years ago when bounced from FR that people would rather hear lies.
