When I lived in Chicago I had a garden in back yard. I brought a home grown cabbage to my Aunt (wife of my Uncle). She made Cole Slaw.
She told me later when the kids were eating it they asked what it was. She told them, "Cole Slaw". They couldn't get enough of it. Cole Slaw from fresh cabbage is a lot different than from one that has been in cold storage for a few months. ;)
