"Last week’s events have shown it to be unwise to doubt the purchasing power of retail investors, and this has been sufficiently demonstrated again on the silver market,"

My old man had a little satchel full of 90% silver coins he had been gathering for years.

When he lived in the Senior Building in Lebanon he was getting coin magazines. He would not lock his apartment door. Some guy that worked there got in his apartment, found the coins and stole them. It was his own fault.

When I was in grade school I played the organ on Saturday for two masses in the Chapel for $5 for the day. If there were five Sundays in a month that was $25.

I would get in the rectory when they were counting out the offerings. There was always a lot of change and I would pluck out the silver quarters and then count them out and replace them with cash from my pocket. I would sell them to the old man. He was happy about it and I was glad to help him out too.

But he was a big cheapskate also. I wanted to be a Cub Scout in Grade School. But you had to buy your own uniform. So that was out of the question.

He would never give my Mom any money either. One time she was driving the old Buick station wagon on Lake Shore Drive. She had three nuns in the car. She had to stop for a red light. She hit the brakes and nothing happened. She had to zig zag around cars to stay out of an accident. If he had checked the brake fluid and found it was low, he would have to go to auto parts store and buy a bottle.

It is just these little things I recall that made life tougher when I was a kid. I made my money by running a paper route like a lot of youger guys did. At least those who were not just hanging out and getting in trouble.

I learned how to fight on the street also and that helped a great deal when I worked the concerts in the 80s and 90s.

I got to kick a lot of ass at those shows. One time I had to beat the crap out of a couple of guys at a concert who were way out of line. My boss, who had been in Vietnnam, saw that and said, "Yeah, Tex got some." ROTFLOL
