What a weasel.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is now trying to float the notion that he was tricked into opposing electoral fraud by former president Donald Trump.

This is McConnell’s latest desperate ploy to end Trump’s influence on the Republican Party and send the GOP back to its neoconservative, Bush-era, losing roots.

The New York Times is running cover for McConnell and trying to help the disgraced GOP establishment figure save face. They published an article featuring McConnell’s desperate spin.

“The senator was also under a false impression that the president was only blustering, the officials said. Mr. McConnell had had multiple conversations with the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and the senator’s top political adviser, Josh Holmes, had spoken with Mr. Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser,” the Times wrote.

“Both West Wing officials had conveyed the same message: They would pursue all potential avenues but recognized that they might come up short. Mr. Trump would eventually bow to reality and accept defeat,” they added.

Far-left liberals, such as the incredulous Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine, are not buying McConnell’s propaganda. They want McConnell to pay for his role in what they are describing as a coup attempt by Trump forces.

“Everything in Trump’s history made it obvious he would provoke a crisis if defeated. McConnell chose to cooperate with Trump’s attack on the republic for the same reason he spent the previous four years cooperating with Trump: because it enhanced his own power,” Chait wrote.

“McConnell is now casting himself as a dupe because it is the only escape. He has been implicated in a historic crime,” he added.

Big League Politics has reported on how GOP constituents prefer Trump’s brand of Republicanism over McConnell’s:

Recent polling indicates that the overwhelming majority of Republicans side with President Donald Trump over Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in their struggle over the future of the GOP.

McConnell has used last week’s violence in the Capitol to agitate against Trump, even flirting with the idea of impeaching the president. Ten Congressional Republicans joined the Democrats to impeach Trump for a second time on Wednesday.

However, McConnell’s feud with Trump comes at the peril of his career prospects. Republicans side with Trump, believing that Trump is right in his complaints about corruption.

An Axios-Ipsos poll shows that a firm majority of Republicans believe Trump was just to oppose election fraud, that he bares no responsibility in what happened at the U.S. Capitol, and they hope he runs again for the presidency in 2024.

Additionally, the results of the poll show a divide that has formed within the GOP. 56 percent of respondents consider themselves “traditional Republicans” while 36 percent of respondents consider themselves “Trump Republicans.” There is likely considerable overlap between the two groups as well, which should scare the likes of McConnell and his special interest masters.

The findings show that the “Trump Republicans” are on board with their president like never before and will be the most formidable anti- establishment constituency in GOP history.

McConnell is one of the most hated politicians in U.S. history. His age of running Republican politics is rapidly coming to an end. The GOP is Trump’s party now.

Some folks don't have the sense to know when it's time to STFU.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken
