San Jose-based robotics company Fetch unveiled the latest robot to replace human forklift drivers in warehouses, called PalletTransport1500, according to a company press release.

The PalletTransport1500 is a square-like robot capable of lifting pallets weighing up to 2,500 pounds. The robot is powered by Honeywell Intelligrated's Momentum software suite designed to automate warehouses.

Fetch claims that forklifts are the most significant safety risks in warehouses, resulting in 100,000 injuries every year. Here's a tweet from the company showing how the robot works.

Our new autonomous warehouse robot is designed to replace forklifts—which are involved in about 100K accidents every year.

See it in action: https://t.co/kjyTKR4Yuy?amp=1 Fetch Chief Product Officer Stefan Nusser said, "even the most well-managed distribution centers are struggling to keep up with the ongoing growth of e-commerce, which is putting tremendous stress on facilities and warehouse associates to move goods in and out of facilities at record speed."

"By combining Fetch's new PalletTransport1500 with Honeywell Intelligrated's Momentum, distribution and fulfillment centers will now be able to orchestrate every aspect of automated warehouse execution for maximum facility efficiency and safety," Nusser said.

While Amazon has been hiring hundreds of thousands of warehouse employees, we've been documenting the proliferation of warehouse robots, slated to take human jobs in the coming years (see: here & here).

To sum up, the robot is designed to remove humans from warehouses. We've warned readers over the years that a wave of automation and artificial intelligence will displace millions of jobs.

Once they can replace most of humanity with robots, what need will there be for humans?

I'm not much impressed. They must have special racks that cost a lot and takes up a lot of space.

This robot is woefully inadequate as it's not even capable of putting a pallet on a shelf above another pallet as is easily done with forklifts. It also wastes space by not being able to put anything on the floor. Warehouses will also need hundreds or thousands of those stands. If it's electric that's a problem too with recharge times but perhaps it's propane powered which forklifts usually are.

Automation will be replacing a huge number of blue collar jobs. So will 3D printing when it starts printing houses and commercial buildings. At whatever point fuel cells & electric motors replace the far more sophisticated and relatively awkward internal combustion engines, lots of car mechanics will also be out of work.

We will be entering an economic phase in the coming decades that will be unlike anything ever been tried before. There will simply not be anything for a lot of people to do.
