Never happen in NYC. I once read of an interview of a Texas Sheriff by a NY Times reporter concerning a similar incident. A Sheriff's Deputy was being killed by a man on the side of a road. A Good Old Boy driving by with a gun rack and rifle in his pickup truck drove up on the incident, stopped, pulled out his rifle and shot the cop killer dead. The Times reporter asked, "Did you arrest the passerby for murder?" The Sheriff looked at the reporter like he was a crazy man.
Anyone who lived in Texas in the 1960s would know that the man was treated as a hero and was never prosecuted. Just goes to show that the Northeast and California are not part of the real America.
Then several years later another "Texan" -- George HW Bush -- signed into law the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 which made carrying a rifle in a gun rack (not "unloaded and in a locked case") within 1000 feet of any elementary or high school a federal felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison. There are schools everywhere, so that's part of our "three felonies per day" thing now.
