Homeless man is first person to ever live in a 3D-printed home in Texas community

“I hope I stay here until my last dying days.”

Those are the words of Tim Shea, who has come a long way since his days as a homeless man once struggling with heroin addiction. He is now the first person ever to live in a 3-D-printed house, according to the home’s maker.

On the outskirts of Austin, Texas, 70-year-old Shea has settled into his 400-square-foot home constructed by 3-D printing. His new home is situated in the Community First! Village site, which is comprised of houses for the chronically homeless.

The 51-acre development has more than 500 homes thus far, including the 3-D variety built by the company Icon, an Austin-based startup.

Shea is among a growing number of seniors in America who have struggled to keep affordable housing. Before his now-permanent 3-D home, he lived in the community in an RV.

A sweet story -- good for him. But I wouldn't call these printed -- looks like the material's being laid in rows thru a nozzle, and for the walls only. Figures aren't very conclusive, so there's no way to compare cost.

Hope it's all true and a great breakthru.

HAH -- no doubt the whole idea. A video starring only an old white guy, can't have that!

Terrifically low-low. Does it endanger traditional building?

Would think that it might, assuming that the final product is as good as advertised. Would prefer one of those to living in a tornado magnet trailer park.

Are they tornado magnets?

That is really strange -- but inarguable, I spose. You'right, tho -- tornadoes don't seem to strike cities, I guess because wind can't roll on the ground with tall bldgs covering it.

I've heard that mobile homes are less expensive (pound for pound shall we say) because they're built so flimsily, not (as ppl might think) because they're factory-made.

Tornadoes do strike cities occasionally but they don't do much damage.

I understand that modern mobile homes are constructed with higher standards than the old ones and, therefore, less likely to be destroyed by the weather.

Hard to imagine when they're basically resting on the ground, huh. Course lots of houses are including mine.

Depends on how firmly they are anchored into the ground. And there is the fact that the Midwest has a lot of trailer parks and a lot of tornadoes.
