For years, many hardcore conservatives warned about former Texas House Speaker Joe Strauss milquetoast policy views and underhanded schemes to derail legislation that diehard Conservatives desired. After constant pressure and massive disapproval from all factions of the Texas Republican Party, Joe Straus stepped down from his position as House Speaker in 2019. Many grassroots conservatives were ecstatic at this news, but theres still much work to be done in Texas. Nonetheless, on April 1, 2021, Straus showed why Texas conservatives never trusted him. He tweeted, Major Texas employers are stepping up and speaking out against voter suppression, and for good reason. Texas should not go down the same path as Georgia. Its bad for business and, more importantly, its bad for our citizens. #txlege Straus made this tweet in the context of the recent passage of Georgias election integrity law, which many on the Left have described as racist. This law is a commonsense election reform measure that takes steps to secure elections from fraud and irregularities that undermine democratic norms. However, this was not enough for the woke crowd and their wealthy patrons. Numerous companies such as Delta Airlines and Major League Baseball have voiced their opposition to Georgias law. In the latter case, the MLB has decided to move the All-Star game from Atlanta in protest. Strauss comment reflects a previous mindset characteristic of country club Republicans, who serve business at all costs. The culturally radical nature of big business these days has put many right-wingers in an uncomfortable position where they must question their pro- business inclinations that theyve traditionally held. Sure, conservatives can praise small and medium-sized enterprises. However, blindly supporting big business is a surefire way to shoot oneself in the foot given how anti-American modern-day corporations have become. Republicans should do everything possible to socially distance themselves from Big Business if they want to tap into the white working class vote and most importantly, maintain political relevance.
