Police called to the site of a shooting and stabbing in London were attacked by a large group of 'young people' on Wednesday night, according to reports. A wild scene unfolded in Brixton, a culturally-enriched district in the British capital known for a large Afro-Caribbean population, as armed riot specialists were deployed to support local officers during widespread unrest.
Metropolitan Police responding to reports of an injured man at around 9:30 p.m. encountered a mob of combatants.
"A 25-year-old man was found with what are believed to be gunshot injuries and stab wounds. He was taken by the LAS to a south London hospital; his condition has been assessed as non-life threatening, but it may be life changing," authorities explained in a statement. "A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody."
"Whilst at the scene, officers were approached by a large group of people and objects including bottles and stones were thrown at them. There were no reported serious injuries."

Police Superintendent Dan Ivey decried the "shocking outburst of violence" that led to a night of chaos.
"The scenes that followed the initial horrific incident were equally unacceptable," Ivey said. "The officers at the scene were working to conduct an investigation following a serious incident and were dispersing crowds when they themselves were subject to an abhorrent attack from crowds of people who pelted them with items."
The Brixton episode was just one of many violent incidents that unfolded across London during a brutal 48 hours.
"London suffered a night of devastating bloodshed as soaring temperatures drove a spike in frenzied violence," the Daily Mail reported on Thursday.
"At least four people were rushed to hospital with stab wounds in the capital last night, with one man fighting for his life after being hacked in a brutal machete fight between four thugs."
