Title: Rep. Louie Gohmert Defends Inmates Being Held On Jan. 6th Charges – “They’re Being Treated Like Third World Political Prisoners”

"If they were Democrats, and were burning down stores, they would already have been out on bail,” he said.

Blatant political persecution being ignored by mainstream media

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) told the Epoch Times recently that prisoners being held on charges related to the January 6th U.S. Capitol debacle are not receiving fair punishment.

“They’re being treated like third-world country political prisoners,” Gohmert said. “I mean, very, very vindictive—like a third world country, except it’s happening in this country.”

Clarifying his stance, the Texas rep explained, “Some of them were violent, and I would have no problem sending them to prison. But there are so many that just did very little. And if they were Democrats, and were burning down stores, they would already have been out on bail.”

As Gohmert noted, some individuals on that day shattered windows and busted down doors to enter the building, but many people were met with open doors and smiles from Capitol police or security who allowed them to walk on in.

Should those who were let in and only looked around the rotunda before exiting the taxpayer-built building be treated like domestic terrorists?

Rep. Gohmert continued, saying, “The two-tier justice system has really become so apparent to anybody that’s paying attention. It is really tragic. But the Justice Department has been able to scare a lot of Republicans and their people that were thinking about coming back to Washington and protesting. And they’re scared to do that because they read and hear about these people being put in jail, who did nothing wrong, some of them—an 18-year-old that gets put in prison and 23 hours a day in solitary, and then after a story came out … and they went to 24-hour lockup.”

Does this sound like “cruel and unusual punishment” as prohibited by the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution?

For many, it could fall into that category, but there is no denying a violation of the 6th Amendment, which guarantees an individual the right to a fair, speedy, and public trial.

Even Democrat Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Dick Durbin (D- Ill.) voiced concern about the poor treatment of the January 6th defendants.

Regarding a possible Eighth Amendment violation, Warren told Politico in April, “Solitary confinement is a form of punishment that is cruel and psychologically damaging. And we’re talking about people who haven’t been convicted of anything yet.”

Senator Dick Durbin told Politico in the same April article that placing someone in solitary confinement should be a “rare exception,” and that “There has to be a clear justification for that, in very limited circumstances.”

That piece was written three months ago and around 25 of the people the Democrat senators were referring to are still being held without bond.

One of the individuals being held is two-time Purple Heart recipient and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Joe Biggs.

Biggs, who was formerly an Infowars reporter, has been held in a Seminole County, Florida jail since April 22 when he turned himself in following a judge’s order.

Despite his award-winning military service and the fact that he turned himself in, a federal court recently denied an appeal and ordered Biggs’ continued detention.

The judge presiding over his case even said, “the very existence of our republic is threatened by” Biggs.

On Friday, Biggs attorney J. Daniel Hull told the court gang members in jail alongside the Army veteran were threatening him due to his political beliefs.

“I do worry about somebody wanting to test Joe Biggs’ mettle,” Hull said. “I think that’s going to be coming up more and more.”

After the menacing remarks were made, Biggs was moved to another part of the jail.

“There have been threats to him either because of his association with the Proud Boys or because of his politics. Or just the way he tends to keep to himself and tries to stay out of trouble,” Hull said.

The Proud Boys, which Joe was affiliated with, are an organization often falsely linked to racism or white supremacy by mainstream media and Democrat politicians despite the fact their leader is a Black- Cuban American.

The group, started by Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes, is a men’s club with members of every race whose core belief is that Western civilization is superior to others.

One person charged with illegally entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6th was released Wednesday after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.

Since that person was already held for six months in jail, he was released days after receiving a six-month sentence.

As Rep. Gohmert asked, why are BLM and Antifa domestic terrorists, some who committed murder, free to continue looting and destroying while peaceful activists are held for months on end?
